CHAPTER 4 — "Someone Tried to Erase Your Family from History."

Outside the flagship boutique...
Chaos had erupted.
News vans lined the street.
Reporters crowded behind the security barriers.
Thousands of people were still watching the livestream that had begun as a simple argument over a necklace.
No one had expected a routine shopping trip to end with the founder of one of the country's most prestigious jewelry houses closing the store and escorting a customer into a restricted archive.
Social media exploded with theories.
"Who is Helena Duarte?"
"Why did the founder recognize her family?"
"What is hidden inside the Heritage Archive?"
Inside the underground vault, however...
The outside world felt a million miles away.
Leonardo Vasconcelos carefully placed Rafael's letter on a large oak table.
For several moments, he said nothing.
Then he looked directly at Helena.
"I owe you an apology."
Helena remained silent.
"Not because of what happened upstairs."
He glanced toward Clarice.
"Although that should never have happened."
He took a deep breath.
"I owe your family an apology for something much older."
Clarice frowned.
"You can't possibly believe our company wronged her family without proof."
Leonardo turned to her.
"I didn't say that."
"I said there are questions I should have asked years ago."
Those words landed like stones.
Clarice lowered her eyes.
For the first time in years...
She had no argument.
Leonardo walked toward another cabinet labeled:
Private Correspondence
Unlike the others, this cabinet required a second key.
He removed a small silver key from his wallet.
"I haven't opened this drawer in over twenty years."
The lock clicked.
Inside were dozens of sealed envelopes, handwritten notebooks, and meeting journals from the company's earliest days.
He began searching carefully.
Minutes passed.
The only sound was paper turning.
Then...
He stopped.
"There it is."
He slowly removed a worn leather notebook.
The cover bore no company logo.
Only two initials, stamped in gold.
R.V.
"Rafael's journal," Leonardo whispered.
"I thought it had been lost forever."
Helena felt her pulse quicken.
"If he kept a journal..."
"Maybe he wrote about my grandfather."
Leonardo nodded.
"Let's find out."
The first pages described ordinary workshop life.
Orders.
Gemstones.
Clients.
Long nights spent perfecting new collections.
Then the tone changed.
The entries became shorter.
More cautious.
Some names had been crossed out.
Several pages had been torn away.
Finally, Leonardo stopped at an entry dated just three weeks before Rafael disappeared.
He read aloud.
"Miguel finished the Eternal Bloom necklace today. It is the finest piece we have ever created. He refuses to release it until every document is complete. He says designs deserve truth as much as beauty."
Helena smiled through tears.
"That sounds exactly like my grandfather."
Leonardo turned another page.
His smile vanished.
Someone had scribbled across the paper in black ink.
Almost every sentence had been covered.
Only a few words remained visible.
"Do not trust..."
"...contract..."
"...copies..."
"Someone inside..."
Clarice shifted uneasily.
"That could mean anything."
"No," Helena said quietly.
"It means someone wanted those words hidden."
Marcos examined the damaged page.
"Who would erase only part of a journal?"
Leonardo answered without looking up.
"Someone who wanted the story forgotten..."
"...but didn't have time to destroy the entire notebook."
A chill spread through the room.
Helena turned another page.
Tucked between the journal leaves was something unexpected.
A black-and-white photograph.
Three people stood together inside the original workshop.
Leonardo.
Miguel Duarte.
And Rafael.
All three were smiling proudly beside a display of newly finished jewelry.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.
"Partners in craftsmanship. Friends for life."
Helena looked at Leonardo.
"My grandmother always said my grandfather believed in loyalty more than money."
Leonardo lowered his head.
"He was right."
"And I failed him."
Before Helena could respond, one of the assistants hurried back into the archive.
"Sir..."
Leonardo looked up.
"What is it now?"
"The board of directors has arrived."
"So quickly?"
"They came as soon as they saw the news."
The assistant hesitated.
"They're demanding an explanation."
Clarice finally looked relieved.
"The board will handle this professionally."
"They won't allow wild accusations based on old letters."
Leonardo closed Rafael's journal.
"They're welcome to ask questions."
"But first..."
He carefully removed a folded blueprint from the back cover of the notebook.
Everyone leaned closer.
It wasn't a jewelry design.
It was a floor plan.
An old architectural drawing of the company's very first workshop.
Several rooms had been marked with red pencil.
One corner of the building was circled three times.
Beside it, Rafael had written only five words.
"The truth sleeps beneath here."
Marcos frowned.
"The building was demolished years ago."
Leonardo slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It was renovated."
"Not demolished."
Helena looked up immediately.
"Does it still exist?"
Leonardo met her eyes.
"Yes."
"It serves as our private museum."
No one spoke.
The realization settled over the room.
If Rafael had hidden something...
If Miguel had left evidence...
If the blueprint was accurate...
Then whatever remained had been sitting beneath the company's museum for nearly three decades.
Untouched.
Waiting.
Leonardo folded the blueprint with extraordinary care.
He looked at Helena with quiet determination.
"I think your grandfather wanted someone from your family to finish what he couldn't."
Then he turned toward the waiting assistants.
"Prepare the museum."
"We're going there now."
As the heavy vault door opened...
None of them noticed the figure standing silently in the corridor outside.
A man in a tailored gray suit lowered his phone after taking a secret photograph through the partially open doorway.
He immediately sent a single message.
"They're going to the museum. If the hidden room is found... everything changes."
A reply appeared almost instantly.
May you like
"Stop them before they get there."
