CHAPTER 1 — The Necklace That Changed Everything

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF THAT JEWEL RIGHT NOW!"
The scream echoed through the luxury jewelry boutique so violently that every conversation stopped mid-sentence.
Crystal chandeliers trembled with the vibration of Clarice Morais's voice.
The pianist playing softly in the corner froze.
Even the security guards instinctively turned toward the center showcase.
For one long second, nobody breathed.
Then dozens of eyes locked onto the woman standing quietly beside the display case.
Helena Duarte.
She didn't move.
She didn't flinch.
She simply rested her fingertips lightly against the velvet counter where the necklace had landed after slipping from the manager's own hands.
Yet to everyone watching...
...it looked as though she had just been caught touching a million-dollar treasure.
Clarice marched around the counter in her high heels, pointing a perfectly manicured finger inches from Helena's face.
"I knew it."
Her voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
"I knew the moment you walked in that you were going to cause trouble."
Several customers exchanged uncomfortable glances.
One elderly couple slowly stepped backward.
A young influencer quietly lifted her phone and started recording.
Clarice noticed.
Instead of calming down...
she became even louder.
"This necklace is worth more than most people earn in ten years."
She folded her arms.
"And somehow you thought you could just grab it?"
Helena looked down briefly.
Then back into Clarice's eyes.
"It slipped from your hand."
Her voice was calm.
Soft.
Almost gentle.
Clarice laughed.
A cruel laugh.
"Oh, now you're accusing me?"
She looked toward the customers.
"Did everyone hear that?"
A few nervous chuckles spread through the boutique.
One salesman lowered his head.
Another pretended to reorganize a display of diamond bracelets.
Nobody dared interrupt the manager.
After all...
Clarice had ruled this flagship boutique for almost twelve years.
Employees feared her more than the company's executives.
She decided who received bonuses.
Who got promoted.
Who got fired.
And everyone knew she despised customers who didn't "look wealthy."
Helena, however, looked nothing like the billionaire wives who usually visited the boutique.
Her emerald-green dress was elegant...
but simple.
No visible designer logo.
No flashy handbag.
No bodyguard.
No diamonds covering her fingers.
Only a leather watch.
Old-fashioned.
Quiet.
Practical.
To Clarice...
that was enough evidence.
She had already judged Helena before hearing her first word.
"You know what people like you always do?"
Clarice crossed her arms.
"You come in pretending to shop."
"You ask to hold expensive jewelry."
"Then you claim it's defective or accidentally damaged."
"It's an old scam."
The accusation spread through the room like poison.
Whispers erupted among the customers.
"Maybe she's right..."
"I've heard of people doing that."
"Look at her watch..."
"She doesn't belong here..."
Each whisper reached Helena's ears.
She heard every single one.
But her expression never changed.
Inside...
something entirely different occupied her thoughts.
She wasn't thinking about humiliation.
She wasn't thinking about leaving.
She wasn't even thinking about the necklace.
She was remembering her grandmother.
Twenty years earlier...
A tiny workshop.
The smell of melted gold.
A little girl sitting beside an elderly craftsman whose hands shook slightly while engraving delicate flowers into a pendant.
"One day," her grandmother had whispered, "this design will remind our family who we are."
Helena had been only nine years old.
She didn't understand then.
She did now.
That necklace inside the showcase wasn't merely beautiful.
It was almost identical to a design created by her grandfather decades ago before his small family workshop disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
A design that had vanished...
along with several confidential sketches...
after one trusted employee suddenly disappeared overnight.
Her grandmother had spent years believing the design had been stolen.
Helena had spent years trying to prove it.
And today...
after months of investigation...
she had finally located the replica.
Not because she wanted to buy jewelry.
Because she wanted answers.
Clarice interrupted her thoughts.
"If you can't afford something..."
"...don't waste everyone's time."
The words hit harder than a slap.
One young saleswoman quietly looked away, embarrassed.
Another whispered,
"Manager..."
Clarice silenced her with one cold glance.
"No."
"I've had enough."
She pointed toward the entrance.
"Leave."
"Immediately."
Helena remained exactly where she stood.
"I haven't done anything wrong."
Clarice smirked.
"Security."
Two guards immediately approached.
Neither looked comfortable.
One of them, Marcos, had worked there nearly eight years.
He had seen Clarice humiliate customers before.
But something about Helena felt different.
She wasn't defensive.
She wasn't frightened.
She wasn't pretending.
She simply looked...
certain.
Almost as though she knew something nobody else did.
Clarice stepped even closer.
"If you refuse to leave..."
"...I'll have you removed."
The influencer filming quietly whispered to her followers.
"This is unbelievable."
"We're watching a woman get kicked out of a luxury jewelry store."
Within seconds...
viewers began flooding the livestream.
Thousands.
Then tens of thousands.
Comments exploded.
"She probably tried to steal."
"Wait for the full story."
"The manager looks aggressive."
"Someone call corporate."
Helena noticed the phones.
She sighed quietly.
She had never wanted public attention.
Especially not today.
Today was supposed to remain confidential.
A simple visit.
A quiet confirmation.
Nothing more.
But fate...
had completely different plans.
She slowly reached into her handbag.
Clarice instantly shouted again.
"Don't touch anything!"
The security guards tensed.
Several customers gasped.
Helena calmly removed...
not a wallet...
not money...
not identification...
But an old photograph.
Its edges were faded.
Its corners worn from decades of careful handling.
She placed it gently on the velvet counter beside the necklace.
Clarice frowned.
"What is this supposed to be?"
Helena didn't answer immediately.
She simply looked at the photograph.
A younger man stood beside an elegant woman inside a tiny jewelry workshop.
Between them...
a display containing the exact same necklace design.
The room grew strangely quiet.
Clarice rolled her eyes.
"A family photo?"
"So what?"
Helena finally spoke.
"This necklace..."
"...should never have existed."
Clarice laughed again.
"You're becoming ridiculous."
"Security, escort her out."
Neither guard moved.
Marcos kept staring at the photograph.
Something about the workshop logo...
felt strangely familiar.
Very familiar.
Before he could say anything...
the boutique's glass entrance doors opened once again.
Everyone instinctively turned.
A sharply dressed man in his sixties entered with two assistants walking behind him.
Every employee inside instantly straightened their posture.
Color drained from Clarice's face.
Because the man walking toward them wasn't an ordinary customer.
He was someone whose arrival had never once been announced in advance.
Someone almost nobody expected to see.
The founder of the entire luxury jewelry empire.
And the moment his eyes landed on the old photograph resting beside the necklace...
his confident expression disappeared.
He stopped walking.
His hands began to tremble.
Then...
in a voice barely above a whisper...
he uttered seven words that froze every person inside the boutique.
May you like
"Where... did you get that photograph?"
