Chapter 6 - Opening the Vault‘Open the box, Gregory,’ Judge Holloway ordered, his tone leaving zero room for argument.

Gregory swallowed hard, his hands visibly shaking as he took the master vault key from his desk drawer and nodded to the armed security guard standing by the heavy steel vault door.

‘Right this way, Your Honor,’ Gregory whispered, leading our strange, tense procession down the long, dim corridor into the freezing sanctuary of the subterranean safe deposit vault.

Julian trailed behind us, his composure completely shattered. He kept muttering under his breath, frantically tapping out text messages on his phone, likely trying to delete digital audit logs that had already been permanently mirrored by the state cyber-fraud division hours ago.

We stopped in front of Box 412.

Gregory inserted the bank’s master key into the upper lock. I stepped forward, my fingers sliding the small, notched silver key—the one Grandma had hidden in the hearth—into the lower cylinder.

We turned them simultaneously.

Clack.

The heavy brass door swung open on oiled hinges, revealing a long, black metal cash box tucked inside the dark alcove.

Gregory slid the box out, placing it carefully on the stainless-steel examination shelf under the overhead spotlight. He unlatched the lid and stepped back.

Inside sat a thick stack of heavy linen parchment tied with twine, a sealed envelope addressed in Grandma Shirley’s immaculate cursive to Nora Vance, and a signed certified copy of the original 1998 property trust deed naming me sole trustee of the Boston Edison house and all underlying family assets.

At the very top of the stack rested a digital voice recorder with a small sticky note attached: Play this out loud if they ever try to sell the tomatoes before the harvest.

My hands didn't shake as I picked up the recorder, flicked the power switch to ON, and pressed play.
