CHAPTER 8 – The Man Who Refused to Die

Richard staggered backward.

His face drained of color.

"No..."

"I watched them bury you."

The old man smiled faintly as he removed his glasses.

"I let you watch."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Even Ethan couldn't speak.

The man standing before them looked older, thinner, and covered in scars—but there was no mistaking him.

It was Walter.

Alive.

Richard's hands began to shake.

"You... you're impossible."

Walter slowly walked toward him, leaning on his cane.

"For twenty years, you believed you had outsmarted me."

"But you forgot one thing."

"I taught you everything you know."

Ethan's voice cracked.

"Grandpa..."

Walter turned toward him, his eyes filling with tears.

"I'm sorry, Ethan."

"I wanted to tell you."

"But if Richard knew I was alive..."

"...he would never reveal himself."

Walter reached out and embraced his grandson.

For the first time since that terrible day in the parking lot...

Ethan felt his grandfather's heartbeat.

He wasn't dreaming.

Walter was alive.

Richard suddenly burst into laughter.

"You really think you've won?"

He held up the remote control.

"The explosives are still armed."

"Those old people are still going to die."

Walter smiled calmly.

"No..."

"They're already safe."

Richard froze.

"What?"

Eleanor stepped forward carrying another tablet.

A live security feed appeared.

The warehouse...

Was completely empty.

Every resident from Walter Home was gone.

Richard stared in disbelief.

"Where are they?"

Walter answered quietly.

"Exactly where they've been for the last twelve hours."

"The real Walter Home."

Richard frowned.

Walter looked at Ethan.

"After I recorded my farewell video..."

"I suspected Richard's spies had infiltrated Aurelius."

"So I secretly evacuated every resident during the night."

"The people in your video..."

"...weren't residents."

The screen zoomed in.

Richard's face turned white.

The figures inside the warehouse weren't elderly people at all.

They were life-sized medical training mannequins wearing realistic masks and hospital gowns.

Every cry for help...

Every movement...

Every heartbeat Richard had watched...

Had been generated by advanced simulation equipment.

Walter had predicted Richard's plan before it ever happened.

Richard screamed with rage.

"You tricked me!"

Walter nodded.

"Just as you tricked the world."

Suddenly Richard pulled a hidden pistol from inside his jacket.

Federal agents shouted.

"DROP THE WEAPON!"

But Richard ignored them.

He aimed directly at Walter.

"If I can't have Aurelius..."

"...neither of you will."

Before he could pull the trigger—

A loud bark echoed through the hall.

A retired police K-9 named Titan, adopted months earlier by Walter Home, lunged from behind a reception desk and slammed into Richard's chest.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Agents rushed forward.

Within seconds Richard was pinned to the floor in handcuffs.

As they dragged him away, he looked back at Walter.

"You didn't beat me..."

Walter smiled gently.

"No."

"You defeated yourself the day you stopped loving your family."

Hours later, police searched Richard's helicopter.

Inside, investigators found something far more shocking than money or weapons.

A sealed medical file.

Walter opened it slowly.

His hands began to tremble.

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

The report contained a DNA test completed only three days earlier.

At the bottom of the page, one sentence was highlighted in red.

"Richard Hale is not Walter Hale's biological brother."

Walter's eyes widened.

"If Richard isn't my brother..."

"...then who has been trying to destroy our family for the last twenty years?"

The room fell silent.

Because somewhere...

Someone even more powerful than Richard was still waiting.

May you like

And the real mastermind had only just made his first move.
