CHAPTER 4: THE SON WHO WAS NEVER DEAD

The red light above the operating room turned on.

SURGERY IN PROGRESS.

Bruno stood motionless.

His mind replayed the same sentence over and over.

Find… our son.

Eight years.

For eight years, he had believed he had no children except Renata.

For eight years, he had mourned a baby boy who, according to Camila, had never died.

It made no sense.

A nurse touched his shoulder.

“Sir, please sit down.”

He didn't move.

“What did she mean?” he whispered.

The nurse couldn't answer.

At the end of the hallway, Doña Mercedes remained standing, pale and shaken.

For the first time in her life, she looked frightened.

Bruno slowly turned toward her.

“You knew.”

She said nothing.

“You knew I had another child.”

“Bruno…”

“You knew!”

His voice echoed through the corridor.

Several nurses stopped to look.

“Answer me!”

Tears appeared in Mercedes' eyes.

“I… I thought he was dead.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Bruno took a step closer.

“Then tell me why she said our son is alive.”

The old woman remained silent.

Suddenly, another voice interrupted.

“Because she never buried him.”

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood near the elevators.

She wore a simple blue sweater and held an old handbag against her chest.

Camila's mother.

Elena Ríos.

Bruno had not seen her in almost nine years.

She looked older, weaker… but her eyes burned with anger.

“Elena?” Mercedes whispered.

“You don't get to say my name.”

Bruno stared at her in confusion.

“What is she talking about?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“You want to know the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then prepare yourself.”

She slowly walked toward him.

“The night my daughter lost her baby…”

She looked at Mercedes.

“…I discovered something.”

Bruno's heart pounded.

“The doctors told us the child had died.”

He swallowed hard.

“But when I went to the nursery to say goodbye…”

Tears filled her eyes.

“The baby was gone.”

Silence.

“What?” Bruno whispered.

“There was no body.”

His blood ran cold.

“The nurses said someone had already taken him.”

“Who?” Bruno asked.

Elena looked directly at Mercedes.

“She did.”

Every face turned toward the old woman.

“No…” Mercedes whispered.

“You took that child.”

“I didn't!”

“You lied to all of us!”

Bruno could barely breathe.

“Mother…”

Mercedes looked terrified.

“I never touched the baby.”

“Then where is he?” Elena cried.

The question echoed through the hallway.

No one had an answer.

Then suddenly—

A voice came from behind them.

“I know where he is.”

Everyone turned.

A man in his sixties stood near the entrance.

He wore a gray suit and held a cane.

Bruno's eyes widened.

“Uncle Ricardo?”

Ricardo Santillán.

His father's younger brother.

A man who had lived in Monterrey for years and rarely visited the family.

Why was he here?

Ricardo looked exhausted.

He seemed to have aged ten years overnight.

“It's time,” he said quietly.

“Time for what?” Bruno asked.

“To tell the truth.”

Mercedes suddenly turned pale.

“No…”

Ricardo ignored her.

“Eight years ago, your mother came to me.”

Bruno's stomach tightened.

“She was terrified because Camila had lost the baby.”

Mercedes began shaking.

“Don't do this…”

“She asked me for help.”

“Ricardo, please…”

“But when I arrived at the hospital…”

He looked directly at Bruno.

“…the baby was alive.”

The world stopped.

Bruno couldn't breathe.

“What?”

“He was premature and very weak, but alive.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

“You're lying,” Mercedes whispered.

“No. I've been lying for eight years. There's a difference.”

Bruno felt dizzy.

“What happened to my son?”

Ricardo lowered his eyes.

“Your mother believed that child would ruin your future.”

“No…” Mercedes cried.

“She wanted him sent away.”

“Stop!”

“So I made a terrible decision.”

The entire hallway fell silent.

“I took the baby.”

Bruno's knees almost gave out.

“You… what?”

“I took him.”

“Where?”

Ricardo's eyes filled with tears.

“To an orphanage.”

A collective gasp filled the corridor.

Elena nearly collapsed.

Mercedes began sobbing.

“You abandoned him?” Bruno whispered.

“I thought I was protecting this family.”

Bruno stared at his uncle as if he were a stranger.

“What orphanage?”

Ricardo swallowed hard.

“Santa María Children's Home.”

Bruno's heart pounded violently.

“That place closed years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then where is my son?”

Ricardo slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old photograph.

A picture of a smiling little boy.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

And a tiny birthmark on his neck.

Exactly like Bruno's.

“He was adopted when he was five.”

Bruno's hands trembled as he took the photo.

“What… is his name?”

Ricardo looked at him.

The answer came softly.

“His name is Daniel.”

Tears filled Bruno's eyes.

Daniel.

His son had a name.

His son had a face.

His son was alive.

Then Ricardo said something that froze everyone.

“I know where he is.”

Silence.

Bruno looked up.

“You do?”

Ricardo nodded.

“He lives in Mexico City.”

“What?”

“I've been watching him.”

For eight years.

The words struck like lightning.

“You know where my son is… and you never told me?”

Tears rolled down Ricardo's face.

“I was a coward.”

Bruno felt his chest tighten.

“Take me to him.”

Ricardo hesitated.

Then he looked toward the operating room.

“There is something you need to know first.”

“What?”

He took a deep breath.

“The people who adopted Daniel…”

He stopped.

“What about them?”

“They're dead.”

The hallway fell silent.

Bruno's face turned pale.

“Dead?”

“They died in a car accident two years ago.”

A terrible feeling spread through his body.

“Then who is raising my son?”

Ricardo's eyes filled with guilt.

He answered in a whisper.

“Someone you know.”

Bruno stared at him.

“Who?”

At that exact moment—

The operating room doors opened.

A doctor stepped out.

Everyone rushed forward.

“How is she?” Bruno asked.

The doctor looked at him gravely.

“Dr. Ríos is alive.”

Bruno exhaled.

“And the baby?”

The doctor smiled faintly.

“The baby survived.”

Tears filled Bruno's eyes.

But then the doctor added:

“She kept repeating one name before falling asleep.”

“What name?”

The doctor looked confused.

“Daniel.”

Bruno froze.

Because somehow…

The son he had never met…

and the baby fighting for life inside that operating room…

were connected.

May you like

In ways he still couldn't imagine.
