CHAPTER 5: THE BOY WHO CALLED HIM “SIR”

The next morning, Bruno had not slept.
He sat outside Camila's hospital room, staring at the photograph in his hand.
A little boy with dark eyes and a shy smile.
His son.
Daniel.
For eight years, he had existed somewhere in the same city, breathing the same air, living an entire life without ever knowing his father.
Bruno's hands trembled.
“How could this happen?” he whispered.
Uncle Ricardo sat beside him, looking ten years older.
“I ask myself that every day.”
“Then tell me everything.”
Ricardo closed his eyes.
“When Daniel was adopted, I thought it was for the best. The couple who took him were kind people. They loved him.”
“And after they died?”
Ricardo lowered his head.
“That was when everything became complicated.”
“Who took him?”
The old man hesitated.
“Someone who knew the truth.”
“Who?”
Ricardo looked directly at him.
“Your late wife's sister.”
Bruno's heart stopped.
“…Sofía?”
Ricardo nodded.
“No.”
“She found documents among her sister's belongings after the funeral. She learned that Daniel was your son.”
Bruno felt dizzy.
Sofía.
The woman who had helped him raise Renata after his wife, Lucía, died three years earlier.
The woman who visited his house every weekend.
The woman Renata called Aunt Sofi.
“She never told me,” Bruno whispered.
“She promised me she would.”
At that moment, Bruno's phone rang.
The screen showed:
Sofía Morales.
His blood turned cold.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?”
“Bruno…”
Her voice was shaking.
“Where are you?”
“At the hospital. Why?”
Silence.
Then she said something that made his heart nearly stop.
“Daniel knows.”
Bruno stood up.
“What?”
“He found the adoption papers.”
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Don't move. I'm coming.”
He hung up and ran.
Twenty minutes later, Bruno's car screeched to a stop outside Sofía's small house.
The front door was open.
Inside, there was complete silence.
“Sofía?”
No answer.
“Daniel?”
Then he heard footsteps.
A boy appeared in the hallway.
About eight years old.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A small birthmark on his neck.
Bruno forgot how to breathe.
The photograph.
It was him.
Daniel.
The boy stared at the stranger standing in his living room.
“You're Mr. Santillán, aren't you?”
Bruno couldn't speak.
The boy smiled nervously.
“My aunt said you might come.”
Aunt.
Not father.
A knife twisted inside Bruno's chest.
“Hi,” he finally whispered.
“Hi.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel looked down.
“Is it true?”
Bruno swallowed.
“What?”
“That you're my real dad.”
The words broke something inside him.
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The boy didn't react.
He simply looked at him for a long moment.
Then he asked the question Bruno feared most.
“Why didn't you want me?”
Bruno's heart shattered.
“No, Daniel…”
“Was I bad?”
“No.”
“Did I do something wrong?”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“Then why did you leave me?”
Tears filled Bruno's eyes.
He fell to his knees in front of the boy.
“I didn't know you existed.”
Daniel frowned.
“You didn't?”
“No.”
The child looked confused.
“But Aunt Sofía said my real father was a good man.”
Bruno covered his face with his hands.
For the first time in years, he cried.
“I searched for happiness in all the wrong places,” he whispered. “And I never knew the best thing in my life was missing.”
Daniel stared at him.
Then, slowly, he stepped closer.
“Are you crying?”
Bruno laughed through his tears.
“A little.”
The boy thought for a moment.
Then he did something unexpected.
He hugged him.
A small, awkward hug.
But it was enough.
Bruno held his son as if he would disappear.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then another voice interrupted.
“I'm sorry.”
They looked up.
Sofía stood in the doorway, crying.
“You should hate me.”
Bruno stood.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I promised your wife.”
He frowned.
“My wife?”
Sofía nodded.
“Lucía knew.”
The room became still.
“What?”
“She found out about Daniel before she died.”
Bruno stared at her in disbelief.
“No…”
“She learned the truth from your uncle.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
Sofía wiped away her tears.
“Because she was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Afraid that if you found Daniel, you'd realize you still loved Camila.”
Silence.
Bruno couldn't move.
“She was dying,” Sofía whispered. “Cancer had already spread. She knew she wouldn't survive.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“She wanted to keep the family together for Renata.”
The words hit him like a train.
Lucía had known.
His wife had carried this secret to her grave.
Then Sofía said something else.
“Before she died… she made me promise that I would take care of Daniel.”
Bruno looked at the little boy.
He suddenly understood.
Daniel had not been abandoned.
He had been protected.
Loved.
Watched over.
Even from a distance.
The boy looked up at him.
“So… what happens now?”
Bruno opened his mouth—
But his phone rang again.
It was the hospital.
He answered immediately.
“Mr. Santillán?”
“Yes?”
“You need to come back right away.”
His stomach tightened.
“Why?”
The nurse sounded terrified.
“Dr. Ríos is gone.”
“What?”
“She disappeared from her room.”
Bruno's blood turned cold.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
“She left a note.”
His hand trembled.
“What note?”
The nurse read it aloud:
'If you want to save our family… don't look for me.'
The call ended.
Silence.
Then Daniel quietly asked:
“Who is Camila?”
Bruno looked at his son.
And for the first time, he realized something impossible.
Daniel had his eyes.
But he had Camila's smile.
And suddenly, a terrifying thought crossed his mind.
What if Camila hadn't run away?
What if…
someone had taken her?
