CHAPTER 1: THE BRUISE NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE

“Dad… please don't tell Mom I said anything.”

Those six words stopped Javier Murillo's heart.

He had just returned from a five-day business trip to Guadalajara. His shoulders ached, his eyes burned from lack of sleep, and all he wanted was to hug his eight-year-old daughter, Lucía.

He even carried a small paper bag filled with her favorite candies.

Usually, Lucía would run into his arms before he even stepped inside.

But tonight, she stood at the end of the hallway like a frightened little ghost.

Barefoot.

Pale.

Shaking.

And holding her stuffed puppy so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“Sweetheart?” Javier said softly. “What's wrong?”

Lucía looked toward the kitchen.

No one was there.

Yet she looked terrified, as if someone might suddenly appear.

Then she whispered:

“My back hurts…”

Javier's stomach twisted.

“What happened?”

She lowered her head.

“Mom said I shouldn't tell you.”

The room suddenly felt cold.

Mariana, his wife, had sent him a text message earlier saying she was shopping with her mother and would be home soon.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing suspicious.

Yet now, looking at his daughter, something inside him screamed that something was terribly wrong.

“Come here, princesa.”

Lucía slowly walked toward him.

After only two steps, she winced in pain.

Javier dropped his suitcase immediately.

“Lucía?”

She bit her lip.

Tears filled her eyes.

“It really hurts.”

He knelt before her.

“Who hurt you?”

The little girl looked like she was carrying a secret too heavy for someone her age.

Finally, she whispered:

“I broke a plate.”

“And?”

“Mom got angry.”

“How angry?”

Lucía's hands began trembling.

“She said I ruin everything whenever you're gone.”

Javier felt his heartbeat quicken.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“She grabbed my arm… I got scared… and then she pushed me.”

Silence.

“I hit the table.”

A long pause.

“She said it was my fault.”

Javier couldn't breathe.

“Show me.”

Slowly, Lucía turned around.

He lifted the back of her sweatshirt.

And nearly collapsed.

A massive purple bruise spread across her lower back.

It looked horrifying.

Not like a small bump.

Not like a child who had simply fallen.

This was the kind of injury that made a father see red.

“Since when?”

“Yesterday.”

“You've been hurting since yesterday?”

She nodded.

“Mom put cream on it and told me to wear my sweatshirt.”

“Why?”

“So nobody would ask questions.”

Javier closed his eyes.

Five days.

He had spent five days away, believing his daughter was safe.

Meanwhile, she had been crying herself to sleep.

“Dad…”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Am I bad?”

He looked at her in shock.

“What?”

“Mom says I'm difficult… and that people leave because of me.”

Javier's eyes filled with tears.

“No. No, Lucía. Never think that.”

“Then why does Mom get angry when I talk?”

He couldn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

And because deep down…

he was suddenly afraid he had never truly known his wife.

“Get your shoes,” he said.

“Where are we going?”

“To the hospital.”

Fear flashed across her face.

“No! Mom will be angry!”

“I don't care.”

“She said they'll take me away if I tell people.”

Javier froze.

“What did you say?”

Lucía looked down.

“She said if I talk too much… social workers will think she can't take care of me and they'll send me away.”

A chill ran through his entire body.

Who says that to a child?

Then—

The sound of a car door slammed outside.

Headlights flashed through the living room window.

Lucía immediately panicked.

“She came back…”

The front door opened.

High heels clicked against the floor.

Mariana walked in carrying shopping bags.

She looked beautiful.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

Until she saw Javier holding Lucía.

Then her face changed.

“What happened?”

“I'm taking her to the hospital.”

Her expression hardened instantly.

“Absolutely not.”

“She has a serious bruise.”

“She fell.”

“She says you pushed her.”

Mariana laughed.

Actually laughed.

“You're going to believe an eight-year-old child over your wife?”

“She is terrified of you.”

“She is dramatic!”

Lucía hid behind Javier.

Mariana noticed.

And her eyes flashed with anger.

“See? This is exactly what she does! She manipulates you.”

“Stop.”

“No, you stop. You disappear for work, then come back acting like Father of the Year.”

Javier stood slowly.

“Move.”

“You're not taking her anywhere.”

“Move.”

“If you walk out that door, don't come back.”

Silence.

Then Javier looked directly into her eyes.

“Then maybe I shouldn't.”

For the first time in years…

Mariana looked afraid.

He picked up Lucía.

Opened the door.

And walked outside.

Then he heard someone calling his name.

“Javier!”

It was Doña Elvira.

The elderly neighbor from across the street.

She looked pale.

Her hands were shaking.

She held her cellphone tightly.

“Please… don't leave yet.”

Javier frowned.

“Is everything okay?”

The old woman looked toward the house.

Then back at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

“What do you mean?”

She swallowed hard.

“I heard your daughter crying yesterday.”

Javier's blood turned cold.

“And…”

The woman looked devastated.

“I didn't just hear it.”

She slowly raised her phone.

“I recorded it.”

Silence.

“What?”

“I was watering my plants. I heard screaming and thought someone was breaking into your house.”

Her voice trembled.

“So I started recording…”

She looked at Lucía.

Then back at Javier.

“And what I captured…”

She burst into tears.

“…is something no child should ever experience.”

Javier's hands began shaking.

“Show me.”

Doña Elvira pressed play.

The video started.

At first, only voices.

Then—

Mariana appeared on the screen.

Screaming.

Lucía crying.

Something shattered.

Then Mariana's voice echoed clearly:

“You're just like your father! You ruin everything!”

Another crash.

Then the sound of a child begging:

“Mommy… please…”

Javier stopped breathing.

But then…

another voice appeared in the video.

A man's voice.

Deep.

Cold.

And completely unfamiliar.

“Stop crying, little girl.”

Javier's face went white.

There was a man inside his house.

A man who should not have been there.

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Javier whispered:

“Who… is that?”

Doña Elvira looked horrified.

“I don't know.”

He slowly turned toward the house.

Mariana was standing in the doorway.

Watching them.

Watching the phone.

Watching the video.

And for the first time in their marriage…

she looked like a woman whose darkest secret had finally been uncovered.

May you like

Then she said six chilling words:

“You were never supposed to see that.”
