CHAPTER 2: THE STRANGER INSIDE THE HOUSE

“You were never supposed to see that.”
Mariana's voice was barely a whisper.
But to Javier, it sounded like thunder.
The night suddenly felt colder.
Lucía tightened her grip around her father's neck.
“Dad… I want to go.”
Javier didn't move.
His eyes remained fixed on his wife.
“Who is that man?” he asked.
Mariana swallowed.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain it to me.”
“Not here.”
“NOW!”
The shout echoed across the street.
Several lights turned on in neighboring houses.
Doña Elvira took a step back, clutching her phone.
Mariana looked around nervously.
“Please, lower your voice.”
“You brought a strange man into our home while our daughter was crying and injured!”
“It isn't what you think.”
“Then what is it?”
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then—
The front door behind Mariana slowly opened.
And a man stepped outside.
Javier felt his entire body freeze.
The stranger was around fifty years old.
Gray hair.
Expensive clothes.
Cold eyes.
He looked completely calm.
As though none of this concerned him.
Lucía suddenly buried her face in Javier's shoulder.
“Dad…”
Her tiny voice trembled.
“That's him.”
Javier's heart stopped.
The stranger looked at the little girl and smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile.
It was the kind of smile that made a person's skin crawl.
“Mariana,” the man said calmly. “I told you this would happen.”
Javier's fists clenched.
“Who are you?”
The man ignored him.
Instead, he looked directly at Lucía.
“You shouldn't have spoken, little one.”
That was enough.
Javier exploded.
He rushed forward and grabbed the man by his shirt.
“Stay away from my daughter!”
“Javier!” Mariana screamed.
The stranger didn't even flinch.
He simply looked into Javier's eyes.
“You have no idea what's happening.”
“Then tell me!”
“You really don't know?”
Javier frowned.
The man's expression changed.
A strange sadness appeared on his face.
Then he asked:
“Has your wife never told you about me?”
Silence.
Mariana's face turned pale.
“Don't,” she whispered.
The stranger looked at her.
“You've hidden the truth for eight years.”
“Please…”
“You should have told him.”
Javier looked between them.
His mind was racing.
“What truth?”
No one answered.
Then Lucía whispered:
“Dad… I'm scared.”
Her voice brought him back.
Nothing mattered more than her.
Not secrets.
Not lies.
Not this strange man.
He picked her up again.
“We're leaving.”
Mariana suddenly stepped forward.
“No.”
“You don't get to stop me anymore.”
“You can't take her.”
“I can and I will.”
Tears suddenly filled Mariana's eyes.
“You don't understand. If you leave tonight… everything will come out.”
Javier stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
She looked broken.
Then she said something that made his blood run cold.
“Lucía isn't in danger because of me.”
Silence.
“She is in danger because of him.”
She pointed at the stranger.
The man's jaw tightened.
“Enough,” he said.
“No!” Mariana shouted.
For the first time that night, she seemed truly terrified.
“You've taken enough from us!”
Javier looked confused.
“What is happening?”
Then the stranger sighed.
“I never wanted it to happen like this.”
“Who are you?” Javier demanded.
The man looked directly into his eyes.
Then he spoke four words that changed everything.
“My name is Ernesto Rivera.”
Nothing happened.
The name meant nothing to Javier.
But Mariana began crying.
“Please don't do this…”
Ernesto continued.
“I am Lucía's grandfather.”
The world stopped.
“What?”
“I am your daughter's grandfather.”
Javier stared at him.
“No…”
“Yes.”
“No!”
He looked at Mariana.
She couldn't even raise her head.
“Tell him,” Ernesto said.
Mariana burst into tears.
“I'm sorry…”
“Tell me what?”
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“He's my father.”
Javier blinked.
“No…”
“Yes.”
“You told me your father died years ago.”
“I lied.”
The ground seemed to disappear beneath him.
For nine years of marriage, Mariana had told him that both of her parents were dead except for her mother, Rebeca.
She had even shown him old photographs.
She had cried while telling him stories.
All lies.
“All these years…” Javier whispered.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Mariana looked at Ernesto.
“Of him.”
The old man smiled coldly.
“Your wife has always been dramatic.”
“Stop talking,” she snapped.
“Or what?”
For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.
Javier noticed it immediately.
This wasn't the fear of a guilty woman.
This was the fear of someone being hunted by her past.
Then Ernesto looked at Lucía.
And his expression darkened.
“She looks exactly like her grandmother.”
“Don't look at my daughter,” Javier said.
“You still don't understand.”
“Then explain it!”
Ernesto sighed.
“I spent years searching for Mariana.”
“Why?”
“Because she disappeared.”
Mariana closed her eyes.
“She ran away,” Ernesto corrected.
“Because you hurt me!”
“Because I tried to protect you.”
“Protect me?” she cried. “You destroyed my childhood!”
The street fell silent.
Even the neighbors listening from behind their windows didn't move.
Javier looked at his wife.
He had never seen this version of her.
Never.
Then Ernesto said something terrifying.
“She never told you why she ran away at eighteen, did she?”
Mariana looked horrified.
“Stop…”
“She never told you why she changed her last name?”
“Please…”
“She never told you why she's terrified every time someone knocks on the door?”
“ENOUGH!”
But it was too late.
Ernesto's next words shattered the night.
“Because someone has been looking for our family for twenty years.”
Silence.
Javier's breathing stopped.
“What?”
Ernesto looked toward the darkness at the end of the street.
Then he whispered:
“They finally found us.”
At that exact moment—
A black SUV slowly pulled up across the street.
Its headlights switched off.
The engine remained running.
Nobody got out.
Nobody moved.
Lucía began crying.
Mariana went completely pale.
And Ernesto whispered:
“Oh God…”
“Who are they?” Javier asked.
No one answered.
Then the back door of the SUV slowly opened.
A tall man stepped out.
He looked directly at their house.
Then he smiled.
Mariana suddenly screamed.
“No… no… no…”
Javier had never heard such terror in a human voice.
Then she looked at him with tears streaming down her face.
And said the one sentence he never expected:
May you like
“Take Lucía and run. Right now.”
