CHAPTER 5: The Bloodline of Glass

The historic Hudson Theatre, built in 1903, had once been a jewel of Broadway. Tonight, it was a fortress of glass and steel, surrounded by black tactical vehicles and armed guards wearing the crest of Ares Holdings.

Inside the grand, gold-leafed auditorium, the velvet seats had been cleared away to make room for a massive, state-of-the-art server terminal. Towering pillars of black glass rose toward the ceiling, glowing with thousands of blinking blue LED lights.

At the center of the room, standing before a circular control console, was Victor Vance. He looked immaculate in his silver-gray suit, his hands clasped behind his back as he watched the progress bar on the main screen.

"PROJECT GEMINI: MAIN INFRASTRUCTURE SYNC — 94% COMPLETE."

Behind him, Leo stood silently, his weapon drawn, his eyes scanning the shadowed balconies of the theater.

"They are here," Leo said, his voice tight. "I can feel it."

"Of course they are," Victor said, his voice smooth, devoid of any warmth. "Edward is a predictable creature. He thinks like a savior now. That is his fatal flaw. A billionaire who discovers he has a heart is a billionaire who is easily destroyed."

Suddenly, the massive stained-glass dome in the center of the ceiling shattered.

A shower of sharp, glittering glass rained down on the auditorium as Edward Haynes descended on a tactical cable, his weapon firing before his feet even touched the marble floor.

Two guards went down instantly.

At the same time, the heavy oak double doors of the theater’s main entrance were blown inward by a breaching charge. Julian and Clara rushed through the smoke, providing suppressive fire as they secured the perimeter.

"Leo! Secure the girls!" Victor screamed, his polite veneer instantly cracking into a mask of pure rage.

Edward unclipped himself from the cable, rolling behind a marble column as a hail of bullets chipped away at the stone.

"Victor!" Edward’s voice echoed through the vast theater like thunder. "It's over! Your network is surrounded! The NYPD is already on their way—the real NYPD, not your paid mercenaries!"

"You're lying, Edward!" Victor snarled, retreating behind the bulletproof glass of the central console. "The city belongs to me! The politicians, the judges, the police chiefs—they were all bought with Haynes money!"

"Not anymore," Clara called out from the balcony. She had Julian's laptop connected to the theater's main projection system.

With a single keystroke, she bypassed the security firewall.

Instantly, the massive projection screen behind the server terminal flickered to life. It didn't show the progress of the sync. It showed a live broadcast of every major news outlet in the world—CNN, BBC, MSNBC.

And on the screen, a document was being scrolled through in real-time. It was the complete, unredacted Ares Holdings database. The bribes. The cloning research. The murder of Dr. Vance. The fake death of Victor Vance.

"A shocking development tonight," the news anchor’s voice boomed through the theater's state-of-the-art sound system. "Leaked classified documents have exposed a massive global conspiracy involving Ares Holdings and the Haynes estate. Federal warrants have been issued for the immediate arrest of—"

"No!" Victor screamed, staring at the screen in horror. "Stop it! Shut it down!"

"It's a global peer-to-peer upload, Victor," Julian said, stepping out from the shadows with his weapon raised. "You can't stop it. It's on ten thousand servers across forty countries."

Victor turned to Leo, his eyes wild with desperation. "Kill them! Kill them all! We can still escape! We have the offshore accounts—"

But Leo didn't move. He was staring at the projection screen, his eyes wide as he saw his own face—labeled as PROJECT GEMINI: SYNTHETIC HUMAN ASSET #01—scrolled through alongside lists of experimental chemical compounds and psychological conditioning logs.

He wasn't a prince. He wasn't the future of the empire.

He was an asset. A weapon to be used and discarded.

"I... I was designed to be perfect," Leo whispered, his hand trembling as he looked at Victor. "You said I was your son."

"You are a laboratory product!" Victor spat, his face twisted in ugly contempt as he drew a compact gold pistol from his jacket and pointed it at Leo's chest. "You are nothing without me!"

Before Victor could pull the trigger, Edward lunged from behind the column.

He tackled Victor to the floor, the gold pistol skittering away across the polished marble. The two men wrestled on the ground, but Edward, fueled by five years of stolen life and the desperate need to protect his family, was unstoppable. He delivered a brutal, shattering punch to Victor's jaw, knocking the older man unconscious.

Edward stood up, his chest heaving, his suit torn and covered in soot.

He turned to Leo.

The young clone stood in the center of the ruins, his gun lowered, looking incredibly lost and fragile despite his tactical gear. He looked like a nineteen-year-old boy who had just realized his entire universe was a lie.

"What am I?" Leo whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at Edward's identical face.

Edward walked over to him. He didn't raise his weapon. He stopped a foot away from the young man who had been created to destroy him.

"You're whatever you choose to be, Leo," Edward said quietly. "My father chose his empire. Victor chose his greed. I chose my family. You can make your own choice."

Leo stared at Edward for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, he turned his weapon around, holding it by the barrel, and offered it to Edward.

"They... they have the girls in the secure room behind the stage," Leo said, a single tear escaping his blue eyes. "I'll show you."

Ten minutes later, the grand doors of the Hudson Theatre were pushed open as the first flashing lights of the real police cruisers began to paint the rainy Broadway streets in red and blue.

Edward walked out into the cool night air.

He was holding Emily and Sophie's hands. Clara walked beside him, her hand slipped into his, her head resting gently on his shoulder. Julian and Leo followed close behind, the young clone looking up at the New York skyline not with the cold calculation of an asset, but with the wide-eyed wonder of a free man.

The Haynes global empire was gone. The stocks would crash, the assets would be seized, and the name Haynes would be associated with one of the greatest corporate scandals in history.

But as Edward looked down at his daughters, who were laughing as they caught the raindrops on their tongues, and then at Clara, whose smile was warmer than the morning sun, he knew the truth.

He had never been richer.

"Daddy?" Sophie asked, looking up at him with her sparkling blue eyes. "Are we going home now?"

May you like

Edward smiled, a genuine, warm, and beautiful smile that reached his eyes for the first time in his life.

"Yes, sweetheart," Edward said, pulling her close as they walked into the rain. "We're going home."
