CHAPTER 2 – THE MAN AT THE DOOR

The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Nobody moved.
Don Mateo's face had turned completely pale.
Even his hands were shaking.
“Dad…” Carlos whispered. “Who is outside?”
The old man looked as if he had seen a ghost.
“I never thought he would come today.”
Another knock.
Sofía clung to her grandfather's arm.
“Grandpa, are you scared?”
Don Mateo forced a smile.
“No, my little princess.”
But everyone could hear the tremor in his voice.
Carlos walked toward the door.
“Wait!” Don Mateo suddenly shouted.
Carlos stopped.
“Please… let me open it.”
The old man slowly crossed the room.
Every step seemed heavy.
When he finally reached the door, he took a deep breath and opened it.
A tall man in his sixties stood outside.
He wore an elegant dark suit and carried a paper bag in his hand.
His hair was gray, and his eyes looked strangely familiar.
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, Mateo.”
Silence.
Carlos frowned.
He had never seen this man before.
But why did he look so… familiar?
The stranger looked past Don Mateo and his eyes landed on Carlos.
For a moment, he seemed unable to breathe.
“That's him,” he whispered.
Don Mateo lowered his head.
“Yes.”
The man stepped inside.
“I'm sorry to arrive without calling.”
Carlos crossed his arms.
“Who are you?”
The stranger looked at him carefully.
His eyes began to water.
“My name is Alejandro Rivera.”
Nothing.
The name meant absolutely nothing.
Then Alejandro looked at Don Mateo.
“I think it's time.”
“No…” Don Mateo whispered.
“You promised.”
“I know what I promised.”
“Then don't do this.”
Alejandro's voice broke.
“I don't have much time either, Mateo.”
The room became silent.
Carlos looked from one man to the other.
“What is happening?”
No one answered.
Sofía stared at the stranger.
“Are you Grandpa's friend?”
Alejandro smiled softly.
“Yes, sweetheart. I've been his friend for a very long time.”
“How long?”
The man looked at Carlos.
“Since before your father was born.”
Everyone froze.
Carlos blinked.
“What?”
Don Mateo closed his eyes.
Alejandro slowly reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.
Its corners were worn.
He handed it to Carlos.
The picture showed two young men standing in front of a small house.
One was clearly Don Mateo in his twenties.
The other…
The other was Alejandro.
And between them…
A pregnant young woman.
Carlos's heart skipped a beat.
He recognized her instantly.
His mother.
“Why do you have a picture of my mother?”
Alejandro didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he sat down.
His hands trembled.
Then he whispered:
“Because… I loved her.”
The room exploded.
“What?” Carlos shouted.
Don Mateo lowered his head.
Mariela covered her mouth.
Sofía looked confused.
Alejandro's eyes filled with tears.
“I loved Elena more than anything.”
Carlos could barely speak.
“My mother died thirty years ago.”
“I know.”
“And?”
The man looked directly into his eyes.
“She was supposed to marry me.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Carlos felt the floor disappear beneath him.
“What are you saying?”
Alejandro looked at Don Mateo.
“He knows.”
Carlos slowly turned.
“Dad?”
Don Mateo didn't answer.
“Dad!”
The old man finally lifted his head.
“He's telling the truth.”
Carlos staggered backward.
“No…”
“We were best friends,” Don Mateo said softly. “I met your mother through Alejandro.”
The room seemed to spin.
Alejandro continued.
“We were engaged.”
“Stop…”
“Your mother was carrying our child.”
“Stop lying!”
Tears streamed down Alejandro's face.
“She was carrying my son.”
Carlos's entire body went cold.
No.
No.
No.
He looked at his father.
“Say something!”
Don Mateo's lips trembled.
Then he whispered:
“You're not my biological son.”
Everything stopped.
The clock.
The breathing.
The world.
Carlos felt as if someone had punched him in the chest.
“What did you say?”
Don Mateo began to cry.
“When your mother was seven months pregnant, Alejandro had an accident.”
Alejandro nodded.
“I was driving home from work. A truck hit my car.”
“They thought he would die,” Don Mateo continued.
“For three months I was in a coma,” Alejandro said.
“Your mother believed she had lost him forever.”
Tears ran down the old man's cheeks.
“She was devastated.”
Carlos couldn't move.
“And during that time…” Don Mateo whispered, “…I fell in love with her.”
Silence.
“By the time Alejandro woke up… Elena and I had already married.”
The room felt colder.
Alejandro looked down.
“She had nowhere to go. Her family rejected her because she was pregnant.”
Don Mateo nodded.
“So I promised to raise you as my own.”
Carlos's eyes filled with tears.
“No…”
“I gave you my name.”
“No…”
“I loved you from the moment I first held you.”
“No!”
Carlos shouted so loudly that Sofía jumped.
“You lied to me my entire life!”
Don Mateo's face broke.
“Yes.”
“Why?!”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That one day you would leave me.”
Tears streamed down the old man's face.
“And now… that's exactly what happened.”
Silence.
Those words pierced Carlos's heart.
Because they were true.
He had left him.
Long ago.
Not because of blood.
But because of neglect.
Because of excuses.
Because he always thought there would be another Sunday.
Alejandro slowly stood.
“I've been paying for Mateo's treatments.”
Carlos looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because he saved my son.”
Silence.
“What?”
Alejandro smiled sadly.
“He could have told your mother the truth.”
“He could have taken you away from me.”
“He could have hated me.”
Instead…
“He loved you enough to become your father.”
Don Mateo lowered his head.
“You were never a burden, son.”
Carlos's eyes filled with tears.
“You were the greatest gift of my life.”
A sob escaped his throat.
For the first time in years…
He saw his father.
Not as an old man.
Not as an obligation.
Not as someone who called too much.
But as the man who chose him.
Every single day.
Then Sofía walked forward.
She looked at Don Mateo and took his trembling hand.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes, my princess?”
“Does this mean you're not really Dad's father?”
The room became silent.
Don Mateo's eyes filled with tears.
“Maybe not by blood.”
Sofía smiled softly.
“Then blood must be stupid.”
Everyone looked at her.
She squeezed his hand.
“Because you're definitely my grandpa.”
The old man burst into tears.
He hugged her tightly.
And for the first time that day…
Carlos cried too.
But he didn't know the worst truth had not yet been revealed.
Because as Alejandro looked at the family, he finally said the words that would change everything again:
“There is one more thing Elena told me before she died…”
Everyone turned toward him.
The man swallowed hard.
May you like
“She said… Carlos has a sister.”
