CHAPTER 5 – THE DAUGHTER OF THE SISTER HE NEVER KNEW

The woman watched Carlos's car disappear down the street.

Her fingers tightened around the old file.

Inside were documents she had hidden for years.

An adoption certificate.

A faded photograph.

And a letter.

A letter that had changed her life.

She took a deep breath.

“They finally know…” she whispered.

Then she started crying.

Three Days Earlier

Her name was Lucía Morales.

Thirty-two years old.

A nurse.

And the only daughter of Isabel Morales.

Two weeks earlier, her mother had been admitted to the same hospital where Don Mateo was now staying.

Advanced heart failure.

No donor.

Little hope.

While organizing her mother's belongings, Lucía had found a small wooden box under her bed.

Inside was a photograph of a young woman.

On the back was written:

"My mother, Elena. I hope I find you one day."

There was also a yellowed envelope.

Inside, a letter.

My dear daughter,

If you are reading this, I may no longer have the strength to keep searching.

I was adopted as a baby.

I spent my whole life looking for my mother.

I don't know if she is alive.

I don't know if she ever loved me.

But if you find my family one day… don't let them hate me for arriving too late.

Love,

Mom.

Lucía had cried all night.

The next morning she hired an investigator.

The results arrived yesterday.

A woman named Elena.

A son named Carlos.

A father named Mateo Herrera.

And a hospital in Puebla.

She had come immediately.

But when she arrived…

She saw something unexpected.

A family.

A grandfather.

A little girl.

Tears.

Love.

She couldn't bring herself to interrupt.

Because there was another truth.

A terrible truth.

She looked again at the hospital entrance.

Then whispered:

“Mom… I found them.”

Mexico City

Carlos and Sofía finally arrived at the address from the photograph.

A small apartment building.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing special.

Yet Carlos's hands were shaking.

“This is it,” he whispered.

Sofía smiled.

“We're really going to meet Aunt Isabel.”

He knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

An elderly neighbor opened her door.

“Can I help you?”

“I'm looking for Isabel Morales.”

The woman's expression changed.

“You're family?”

Carlos hesitated.

“I think so.”

The neighbor's eyes filled with sadness.

“Oh, dear…”

A terrible feeling entered his chest.

“What happened?”

“She was taken to Saint Gabriel Hospital yesterday.”

“Why?”

The woman looked down.

“Her heart is failing.”

Silence.

Carlos felt cold.

“What room?”

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the hospital.

The receptionist pointed them toward the cardiac ward.

Room 318.

Carlos stood outside the door.

Unable to move.

Sofía gently squeezed his hand.

“You can do it.”

He nodded.

Slowly, he opened the door.

The woman in the bed looked up.

Dark hair.

Warm eyes.

His mother's eyes.

She seemed surprised.

“Can I help you?”

Carlos couldn't speak.

The woman smiled politely.

“Are you lost?”

Tears filled his eyes.

“No…”

Silence.

“My name is Carlos Herrera.”

The smile disappeared.

“Okay…”

His voice shook.

“I think…”

He swallowed hard.

“I think I'm your brother.”

Everything stopped.

The woman's face turned white.

“What?”

He took out the photograph.

Then his mother's letter.

She stared at them.

Her hands began trembling.

“No…”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“No… no…”

She looked at the photograph again.

The young woman in it.

Elena.

Her mother.

The mother she had never known.

She burst into tears.

“You found me?”

Carlos nodded, crying.

“I think… I just did.”

For several seconds neither of them moved.

Then Isabel slowly reached out her hand.

Carlos took it.

And suddenly…

She pulled him into a hug.

Both of them sobbed.

Forty years.

A lifetime apart.

And yet somehow…

They felt like family.

Sofía was crying too.

“Hi, Aunt Isabel.”

The woman laughed through tears.

“You're my niece?”

“Yes.”

“Oh my goodness…”

She hugged the little girl.

Then looked back at Carlos.

“Tell me everything.”

So he did.

He told her about Elena.

About Don Mateo.

About the three plates.

About the lonely Sundays.

About the secret.

About finding her.

By the end, Isabel was crying uncontrollably.

“He wanted to meet me?”

Carlos nodded.

“He already calls you his daughter.”

She covered her mouth.

“All these years… I thought nobody wanted me.”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I spent my entire life believing I had been abandoned.”

Carlos took her hand.

“You weren't.”

He handed her the letter.

Their mother's final words.

She read every line.

Then she cried harder than before.

“She loved me…”

“She never stopped looking for you.”

For the first time in decades, Isabel smiled.

A real smile.

Then suddenly—

Someone knocked on the hospital door.

A nurse entered.

“Excuse me…”

She looked nervous.

“We need to speak with the family.”

Carlos stood.

“Is something wrong?”

The nurse swallowed.

“We found a compatible heart donor.”

Silence.

Isabel looked stunned.

“What?”

The nurse smiled.

“A donor became available this morning.”

Tears filled everyone's eyes.

“Does that mean…” Sofía asked.

“It means your aunt has a chance to live.”

The room exploded with happiness.

But then the nurse added:

“There is one condition.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The donor's family wants to meet Isabel first.”

Carlos frowned.

“Why?”

The nurse looked at the file.

Then softly said:

“Because… the donor specifically requested that his heart go only to her.”

Silence.

“What?”

The nurse looked up.

“And his name is…”

She stopped.

Her face suddenly changed.

She looked directly at Carlos.

“You should sit down.”

“Why?”

The nurse's voice trembled.

May you like

“Because the donor is someone you know.”
