Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

🚨 THE SECRETS OF THE PENTHOUSE UNLOCKED! ELENA SPEAKS THE ONE NAME THAT NATHANIEL THOUGHT WAS BURIED FOREVER...The sirens wailed through the rainy Manhattan streets as the ambulance rushed Nathaniel Cross to Presbyterian Hospital.

Inside the penthouse, the silence returned, heavier and more suffocating than ever before. Elena stood in the center of the office, her hands shaking. Lily was curled up on the sofa, clutching her doll, her cheeks stained with tears.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered. "Is Mr. Nathaniel going to die?"

"No, baby. The doctors are going to help him," Elena said, though she didn't believe her own words. She had seen the gray pallor of Nathaniel’s skin. She knew what heart failure looked like; her own father had passed away from it.

As Elena walked over to Nathaniel’s desk to tidy up the chaos left by the paramedics, her eyes caught the black leather binder lying open on the floor. She knelt to pick it up, intending to close it and place it back in the drawer.

But the photograph caught her eye.

Elena froze. The breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered so violently she thought it might burst through her ribs.

She reached down with a trembling hand and picked up the faded picture.

The woman in the photo was smiling, holding a paint palette, her dark curls windblown. On her left temple was a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark.

"Sofia..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking.

Sofia was Elena’s older sister.

Sofia, the brilliant, passionate artist who had disappeared from their family's life twelve years ago after moving to New York on an art scholarship. Sofia, who had cut off all contact, leaving only a string of cryptic, heartbroken letters before she tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident nine years ago.

Elena’s family had never known who Sofia had been with in New York. They only knew that Sofia had fallen in love with a wealthy, powerful man who had allegedly broken her heart and abandoned her when she needed him most.

Nathaniel Cross.

"It was him," Elena whispered, tears of shock and sudden, burning anger hot in her eyes. "He was the man who destroyed her."

She gripped the photo so hard the edges bent. Suddenly, the luxurious penthouse didn't feel like a sanctuary anymore. It felt like a gilded cage built on the bones of her sister’s broken dreams. Nathaniel’s coldness, his isolation, his hatred of art and color—it wasn't just a personality trait. It was guilt.

"Elena?"

Mrs. Whitmore’s voice broke the silence. The old housekeeper had just returned from running errands, her face pale with worry. "The doorman said the ambulance... Oh dear God, is Nathaniel...?"

Elena stood up, hiding the photograph in her pocket. She looked at Mrs. Whitmore, her expression hardening. "He had a heart attack, Mrs. Whitmore. He’s at the hospital."

Mrs. Whitmore sank into a chair, burying her face in her hands. "I knew it. I knew his heart was failing him. He refuses to take care of himself. He’s been carrying that guilt for twelve years, and it’s finally killing him."

Elena stepped closer, her voice low and dangerous. "What guilt, Mrs. Whitmore? What did he do to Sofia?"

Mrs. Whitmore gasped, her head snapping up. She looked at Elena, then at the open binder on the floor. A look of profound realization and sorrow washed over the old housekeeper’s face.

"You... you know Sofia," Mrs. Whitmore whispered. "You have her eyes, Elena. I knew you looked familiar the day you walked in here. I just couldn't place it..."

"Tell me the truth," Elena demanded, her voice shaking with a mix of grief and rage. "Did he kill her?"

"No! No, heavens no!" Mrs. Whitmore stood up, grabbing Elena’s hands. "Nathaniel loved Sofia more than his own life. She was the only light this dark apartment ever had. But Nathaniel’s father... he was a monster. He threatened to ruin Sofia’s family, to destroy her career, and to throw her in prison on fabricated charges if Nathaniel didn't leave her and marry an heiress to secure the Cross Meridian merger."

Mrs. Whitmore’s eyes filled with tears. "Nathaniel tried to fight him. But his father was ruthless. To protect Sofia, Nathaniel pretended to have an affair. He made Sofia believe he never loved her. He broke her heart to save her. Sofia left New York the next day... and a year later, she was gone. Nathaniel never forgave himself. He turned his heart to stone. He built this empire just to tear down his father’s legacy, but in doing so, he destroyed his own soul."

Elena listened, her anger warring with a profound, aching sorrow. She looked down at Lily, who was watching them with wide, innocent eyes.

Suddenly, Elena’s phone rang. It was the hospital.

She answered it quickly. "Hello?"

"Is this Elena Morales?" a nurse’s voice asked urgently. "You are listed as the secondary emergency contact on Mr. Cross’s medical file. He has regained consciousness, but his condition is critical. He is asking for you. And... he is asking for Lily."

Elena looked at her daughter. The sister of the woman Nathaniel had loved, and the innocent child who had managed to crack his icy exterior.

"We’re on our way," Elena said.
