Chapter 3 - Thirty Thousand Feet Above RealityInside the quiet, first-class cabin of Flight 404 to Rome, the world felt delightfully small.

Claire Vale Holloway sat by the window, sipping a glass of sparkling water with a twist of lemon. Below her, the North American coastline was dissolving into an endless expanse of dark, churning Atlantic Ocean.

She opened her leather-bound sketchbook to a blank page.

For the first time in four years, her hand didn't hesitate. She didn't feel the phantom weight of expectations, the suffocating pressure of Holloway family dinners, or the dull ache of disappointments she had spent years trying to swallow.

She felt light. She felt real.

Her phone, sitting on the tray table, was completely silent. It was a burner device—her old phone, containing every single piece of evidence, every text, every receipt, and every recorded phone call, was currently sitting in a secure digital vault accessible only to her father’s legal team and a federal prosecutor.

She had left her wedding ring on the silver bowl in the foyer, resting right beside the house keys she no longer needed.

“Signora Holloway?”

Claire looked up. A flight attendant was standing in the aisle, smiling warmly. “We are about to begin our initial descent into Rome Fiumicino. The captain asked me to hand this to you.”

The flight attendant placed a small, white envelope on her tray table. It wasn't corporate letterhead. It was heavy, cream-colored stationery, addressed in precise, elegant handwriting.

Claire frowned slightly. She opened the envelope and pulled out a single card.

“A masterpiece is never truly finished until the inferior layers are completely scraped away. Welcome home, Claire.”

There was no signature. But at the bottom right corner was a small, embossed sketch of a Florentine lily—the symbol of the Bellweather Institute.

Claire looked out the window as the airplane broke through the morning clouds. Below her, the rolling hills of Tuscany stretched out under the golden Italian sun, ancient, enduring, and waiting to be restored.

She picked up her pen, smiled softly, and began to draw.
