CHAPTER 1 — The Caregiver Everyone Hated Was the Only One Who Could Save His Son

The first thing Mauricio Alcázar noticed was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The terrifying kind.
For eleven months, his son Emiliano had lived inside a world without words.
No laughter.
No questions.
No “Dad.”
Only the sound of machines, hospital doors, and doctors repeating the same sentence:
“Your son may never recover.”
Mauricio had heard that sentence from dozens of specialists.
But he refused to accept it.
A man like Mauricio Alcázar was not used to losing.
He owned luxury nightclubs across Mexico City, private security companies, and businesses powerful enough that people lowered their voices whenever his name was mentioned.
He had money.
Influence.
Connections.
If someone needed a problem disappeared, Mauricio knew who to call.
But there was one thing no amount of money could buy.
His son’s voice.
And every night, he sat alone in his office, watching the same security footage.
A small boy lying motionless in a wheelchair.
A boy who used to run through the house.
A boy who used to jump into his father’s arms every time he came home.
A boy who changed forever after the accident on the Mexico–Cuernavaca highway.
The official story was simple.
A truck without license plates crossed into their lane.
The car crashed.
His wife Mariana died instantly.
Emiliano survived.
But his spine was severely damaged.
The doctors said the trauma affected his body and his emotions.
They said his silence was a consequence of the accident.
But Mauricio never believed in coincidences.
Especially not after discovering that someone had leaked their travel route before the crash.
Someone knew exactly where they would be.
Someone wanted them vulnerable.
And now, almost a year later, Mauricio still didn’t know who.
“Put Him in an Institution.”
The words came from Verónica Luján.
His future wife.
The woman who smiled beautifully in public and controlled every detail behind closed doors.
She stood in front of the mirror inside Mauricio’s office, fixing her earrings.
“Your son doesn’t need a home anymore, Mauricio.”
She looked at her reflection.
“He needs an institution.”
Mauricio slowly turned toward her.
“What did you say?”
Verónica sighed.
“I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m being realistic.”
She walked toward the desk.
“You have businesses. Responsibilities. A reputation to maintain.”
Then she lowered her voice.
“Emiliano needs professional care. Not a father who spends every night watching a child who doesn’t even recognize him.”
Those words cut deeper than any insult.
Because deep down, Mauricio feared she was right.
Maybe his son was gone.
Maybe only his body remained.
But then he looked at the screen again.
At Emiliano’s face.
And he made a decision.
“No institution.”
Verónica frowned.
“Then what?”
“I’ll find someone.”
“Someone?”
“A caregiver.”
Verónica smiled slightly.
“Good luck. Everyone quits.”
She was right.
After the accident, Mauricio had become impossible to work for.
Nurses left.
Therapists resigned.
Assistants disappeared.
Some said he was paranoid.
Others said he was dangerous.
Mauricio didn’t care.
He trusted nobody.
Until Camila Reyes arrived.
The Woman Everyone Accused
Camila was only 28 years old.
Young.
Quiet.
Professional.
She had worked in pediatric care for years.
But there was one thing on her record that made everyone hesitate.
A scandal.
Three years earlier, Camila had been accused of stealing sedatives from a private clinic in Interlomas.
The accusation destroyed her career.
People called her a thief.
A criminal.
Someone who should never be near children.
She was never convicted.
There was no evidence.
But rumors were stronger than facts.
And Mauricio knew that.
That was exactly why he hired her.
A person with a damaged reputation was easier to control.
Easier to monitor.
Easier to blame if anything happened.
At least, that was what he thought.
“Are you sure about this?” Ramiro Vélez asked.
Ramiro had been Mauricio’s closest friend and business partner for seventeen years.
He was one of the few people Mauricio trusted.
“She’s dangerous,” Ramiro warned.
“Everyone says she stole medication.”
“Everyone says a lot of things.”
Mauricio looked at him.
“You think I’m making a mistake?”
Ramiro hesitated.
“I think bringing a person like that into your house is risky.”
Mauricio smiled coldly.
“Everything around me is risky.”
He signed the contract.
And Camila Reyes entered the Alcázar mansion.
The House Full of Secrets
The rules were strict.
Camila couldn’t leave the property with Emiliano.
She couldn’t invite anyone inside.
She couldn’t change his treatments.
She couldn’t question Verónica.
She had to follow every instruction.
Especially Verónica’s.
Camila noticed something strange immediately.
The house was enormous.
Beautiful.
Expensive.
But it felt empty.
Like nobody actually lived there.
The staff avoided eye contact.
The hallways were silent.
And everyone seemed afraid of one woman.
Verónica.
The first day, Camila entered Emiliano’s room.
The boy stared at the ceiling.
No reaction.
No movement.
No emotion.
She placed her bag down.
“Hello, Emiliano.”
Nothing.
“I’m Camila.”
Silence.
“I know everyone thinks you don’t hear them.”
She sat beside him.
“But I don’t believe that.”
For the first time in months, someone spoke to him like he was still a person.
Not a patient.
Not a problem.
A person.
The Cameras
Mauricio was watching.
Hidden cameras were everywhere.
One inside Emiliano’s stuffed bear.
One inside the smoke detector.
One behind Mariana’s old photograph.
He watched every moment.
Waiting.
Waiting for Camila to make a mistake.
A careless comment.
A suspicious action.
Anything.
For two weeks, he found nothing.
Instead, he saw something impossible.
Camila reading stories to Emiliano.
Camila playing old Mexican songs.
Camila gently moving his legs during therapy.
Camila asking:
“Which shirt do you want today?”
Even though he couldn’t answer.
And then something changed.
A tiny movement.
A reaction.
Emiliano’s eyes began following her.
Mauricio noticed.
And for the first time in eleven months…
He felt hope.
But hope quickly turned into fear.
Because Camila noticed something he had missed.
Something hidden inside his own house.
The Milk Glass
It happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Verónica entered Emiliano’s room carrying a tray.
A glass of milk.
A plate of gelatin.
“Doctor’s orders,” she said.
“He needs more nutrition.”
Camila smiled politely.
But her eyes changed.
Mauricio saw it through the camera.
She was suspicious.
“Drink everything, Emiliano,” Verónica said.
Then she left.
The moment the door closed…
Camila locked it.
Mauricio leaned closer to the screen.
“What are you doing?”
Camila opened a small medical kit.
She removed a syringe.
Mauricio stood up instantly.
“No…”
His heart raced.
“She’s going to inject him.”
He reached for his phone.
He was ready to call security.
But then he froze.
Because Camila didn’t touch Emiliano.
She inserted the syringe into the milk.
She collected a sample.
Then she added a chemical solution.
Seconds passed.
The liquid changed color.
Dark purple.
Camila’s face went pale.
Mauricio stopped breathing.
“What is that?”
Camila whispered:
“No…”
She looked at Emiliano.
“Oh my God…”
She grabbed his hand.
“Emiliano…”
The boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“You’ve been feeling weaker because of this.”
She looked toward the hidden camera.
Almost as if she knew Mauricio was watching.
“Someone has been poisoning you slowly.”
Mauricio felt his entire body go cold.
The caregiver he hired to expose a thief…
Was the first person who discovered someone was trying to murder his son.
Camila leaned closer to Emiliano.
“I’m sorry nobody believed you.”
A tear rolled down the boy’s face.
“But I believe you.”
Then something happened that shocked Mauricio.
After eleven months of silence…
Emiliano moved his fingers.
Just slightly.
But he moved them.
Mauricio covered his mouth.
His son was still fighting.
Suddenly…
The bedroom door opened.
Camila turned around.
Her face changed.
Because standing there was not Verónica.
It was Ramiro.
Mauricio’s best friend.
The man who had warned him about Camila.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect his family.
Ramiro smiled.
But there was no warmth in his eyes.
Hidden inside his sleeve was a small syringe.
Camila stepped backward.
“What are you doing here?”
Ramiro locked the door.
Then he whispered:
“You should have stayed away from this family.”
Mauricio watched from the screen.
Unable to move.
Unable to breathe.
Because the man he trusted for seventeen years was standing beside his son’s bed…
Holding the same weapon used to slowly destroy Emiliano.
And then Ramiro said something that changed everything:
“Your father was never supposed to find out what happened to your mother.”
Mauricio froze.
His wife’s accident.
The leaked route.
The poisoning.
The silence.
They were all connected.
And the person behind it all…
May you like
Was much closer than he ever imagined.
