CHAPTER 2 — The Man Behind the Smile Was the Monster Inside the House

Mauricio couldn’t move.
For seventeen years, Ramiro Vélez had been more than a business partner.
He was family.
The man who stood beside him during his first business opening.
The man who helped him survive his darkest moments.
The man who held his shoulder at Mariana’s funeral and promised:
“Brother, I’ll protect you and Emiliano no matter what.”
But now…
Through the hidden camera…
Mauricio watched that same man standing beside his son’s bed with a syringe hidden in his hand.
A syringe meant for Emiliano.
A syringe meant to finish what someone started.
His hands trembled as he grabbed his phone.
He wanted to call security.
He wanted to break down the door.
But something stopped him.
Camila.
The caregiver looked terrified.
But she wasn’t running.
She stepped between Ramiro and Emiliano.
“Put that away.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Ramiro laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
He slowly pulled the syringe from his sleeve.
“You think you discovered a crime.”
He smiled.
“But you only discovered something you were never supposed to see.”
The Truth Behind the Poison
Camila looked at the syringe.
“What is inside?”
Ramiro’s smile disappeared.
“You’re asking too many questions.”
“I asked what is inside.”
For the first time, Ramiro looked nervous.
Because Camila wasn’t acting like a scared caregiver anymore.
She was acting like someone who knew exactly what she was dealing with.
“I worked in pediatrics,” she said.
“I know medications. I know symptoms. I know what slow poisoning looks like.”
Ramiro’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re smarter than people said.”
Camila stared at him.
“And you’re exactly what I suspected.”
Mauricio watched the scene in disbelief.
Suspected?
How long had she known?
How much had she discovered while he was secretly watching her?
The Woman With the Damaged Reputation
Three years earlier, everyone believed Camila Reyes stole medication from the clinic.
But nobody knew the truth.
Nobody knew she had discovered a doctor selling controlled substances illegally.
Nobody knew she reported it.
And nobody knew the doctor had powerful friends who destroyed her reputation before she could expose him.
The sedatives found in her locker?
Planted.
The accusations?
Fabricated.
Her career?
Destroyed.
Camila lost everything.
Her job.
Her friends.
Her future.
But she never lost one thing.
Her instinct to protect children.
And when she entered Mauricio’s house, she immediately noticed something wrong.
Emiliano wasn’t recovering.
He was deteriorating.
His muscles weakened.
His appetite disappeared.
His eyes became more exhausted every week.
The doctors blamed the accident.
Camila didn’t.
Because she had seen cases like this before.
Someone wasn’t letting him heal.
Someone was keeping him weak.
The First Mistake
Ramiro stepped closer.
“You should have ignored the milk.”
Camila’s eyes hardened.
“So it was you?”
Ramiro laughed.
“You think I’m stupid enough to confess?”
“No.”
She looked toward the camera hidden behind the photograph.
“But I think you already confessed enough.”
Ramiro froze.
The smallest reaction.
But Camila noticed.
Mauricio noticed too.
The man on screen looked toward Mariana’s photograph.
Toward the camera.
He knew.
He knew Mauricio was watching.
A terrible realization hit Mauricio.
Ramiro wasn’t surprised.
He wasn’t afraid.
He wanted Mauricio to see.
A Message for Mauricio
Ramiro slowly walked toward the camera’s direction.
Then he smiled.
“Watching from your office, aren’t you, Mauricio?”
Mauricio’s blood turned cold.
The room became silent.
Ramiro knew.
He knew about the cameras.
He knew about everything.
He looked directly into the lens.
“Do you know what your biggest mistake was?”
Mauricio stared at the screen.
Ramiro continued:
“You thought you were the only person hiding things in this house.”
Then he looked back at Emiliano.
“Your son saw something that night.”
Mauricio stopped breathing.
“What?”
Ramiro whispered:
“The accident wasn’t an accident.”
The words hit him like a bullet.
For eleven months, Mauricio believed he lost his wife because of bad luck.
Because of a reckless driver.
Because of a random tragedy.
But Ramiro continued:
“Mariana discovered the truth.”
Camila looked shocked.
“She knew who caused the crash.”
Mauricio grabbed the desk.
His wife knew?
She was killed because she knew something?
The Secret Mariana Left Behind
Ramiro walked closer to Emiliano.
“Your son was supposed to die that night too.”
Camila immediately moved.
“Don’t touch him.”
Ramiro smiled.
“But he survived.”
He looked at the boy.
“And that created a problem.”
Mauricio’s heart shattered.
His son wasn’t a victim of an accident.
He was a witness.
A witness someone had been trying to silence for almost a year.
Then Emiliano suddenly reacted.
His hand moved.
His fingers grabbed Camila’s.
Everyone froze.
For eleven months, the boy had shown almost no movement.
But now…
He was trying to communicate.
Camila leaned closer.
“Emiliano?”
The boy struggled.
His lips trembled.
A weak sound escaped.
Almost impossible to hear.
But it was a word.
A name.
“Ra…”
Camila’s eyes widened.
“Ramiro?”
Mauricio felt tears forming.
His son remembered.
The Unexpected Ally
Suddenly, the lights went out.
The entire mansion became dark.
A scream came from downstairs.
Then another.
Ramiro looked toward the door.
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
Someone else was inside the house.
Someone he didn’t expect.
Camila grabbed Emiliano’s wheelchair.
“Who is it?”
Ramiro didn’t answer.
The bedroom door slowly opened.
A woman stood there.
An older woman.
Holding an old photograph.
Mauricio recognized her immediately.
She was Mariana’s former housekeeper.
Rosa.
Everyone thought she disappeared after the accident.
But she was alive.
And she had been hiding for eleven months.
Rosa looked at Ramiro.
Her voice shook.
“I know everything.”
Ramiro’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Rosa walked into the room.
“I saw what you did to Mariana.”
Silence.
Then she looked at Mauricio through the camera.
“And I know who ordered it.”
Mauricio felt his entire world collapse.
Because Rosa said the one sentence that would destroy everything he believed:
“Your wife wasn’t killed by an enemy.”
She looked toward Verónica’s room.
May you like
“She was killed by the woman you planned to marry.”
