CHAPTER 2 — “The Door Under the Mansion”

Emily ran before her father could grab the key.
“Stop her!” David shouted.
But no one moved.
Not the guests.
Not the waiters.
Not even Victoria.
Because everyone had seen it.
The fear in David Carter’s eyes.
Emily rushed into the mansion, down the marble hallway, past portraits of a perfect family that had never truly existed. Her heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe.
Then she reached the basement door.
The silver key shook in her hand.
Click.
The lock opened.
Behind the door was not wine.
Not old furniture.
Not storage.
It was a hidden office.
Inside were boxes of documents, old photos, medical reports… and one video tape labeled with her mother’s handwriting:
“For Emily — When He Lies.”
David arrived behind her, breathless.
“Emily,” he said, suddenly gentle. “Put it down.”
She turned slowly.
“Why?”
David’s lips trembled.
“Because your mother didn’t understand everything.”
Emily picked up the tape.
“No, Dad.”
Her tears finally fell.
“She understood enough.”
Victoria stepped into the doorway, her face white as paper.
“What is this, David?”
Emily opened the first folder.
At the top was a life insurance policy.
Her mother’s name.
David’s signature.
And a date.
One week before her mother’s accident.
The room went silent.
Victoria looked at David like she was seeing a stranger.
“You told me your wife died suddenly…”
David whispered, “She did.”
Emily’s voice cracked.
“Then why did Mom write that if anything happened to her, everyone should check this room?”
David lunged forward.
Emily screamed.
But before he could reach her, two police officers stepped into the basement.
David froze.
Emily wiped her tears and whispered:
“I didn’t come alone.”
Behind the officers stood an older woman.
David’s former housekeeper.
The woman everyone thought had disappeared years ago.
She looked straight at David and said:
“I saw what you did that night.”
And for the first time…
May you like
David Carter had nowhere left to hide.
