CHAPTER 3 — “The Witness They Tried to Erase”

The basement was silent.
David Carter stared at the elderly housekeeper as if he had seen a ghost.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"I paid you to disappear."
The woman stepped forward without fear.
"You paid me to stay quiet."
She looked at Emily with tears in her eyes.
"But I promised your mother I'd tell you the truth when the time was right."
The police officers exchanged glances.
One of them opened a notebook.
"Mr. Carter, we'd like you to explain what happened on the night your wife, Sarah Carter, died."
David forced a laugh.
"This is ridiculous. You have no evidence."
Emily slowly lifted the videotape.
"What if we do?"
The room froze.
Victoria whispered, "David... what's on that tape?"
"No one is watching it!" David roared.
He lunged toward Emily, but an officer blocked his path.
"Stay where you are."
Emily walked to an old television sitting in the corner of the hidden office. Dust covered the screen, but the power still worked.
Her hands trembled as she inserted the tape.
Static.
A flicker.
Then...
Her mother's face appeared.
Sarah Carter looked exhausted, her eyes red from crying.
"If you're watching this," she began softly, "it means I was right."
Emily burst into tears.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
"David has been stealing money from his own company for years."
The room fell silent.
"He created fake charities, fake contracts, and fake accounts overseas. If anyone discovered the truth... he said they would disappear."
Victoria covered her mouth.
"No..."
Sarah continued.
"And yesterday... I found out something even worse."
She held up a folder.
"David has been planning my death to collect my life insurance and marry someone who knows nothing about his past."
David screamed.
"Turn it off!"
Nobody moved.
Sarah's voice echoed through the basement.
"If anything happens to me, it was never an accident."
The screen went black.
For several seconds...
No one breathed.
Then one of the officers slowly turned toward David.
"Mr. Carter..."
"We're placing you under arrest for suspicion of fraud, conspiracy, insurance fraud, and possible involvement in the death of your wife."
The sound of handcuffs echoed through the hidden room.
Guests who had followed downstairs began recording everything with their phones.
Within minutes, videos of David being arrested spread across social media.
Millions watched the powerful businessman walk out of his own mansion in handcuffs.
His empire was collapsing...
Live.
But as Emily hugged the old housekeeper, another officer approached carrying a small locked wooden box found behind the safe.
"Miss Carter..."
"We found this hidden inside the wall."
Emily slowly opened it.
Inside was a newborn hospital bracelet.
A faded birth certificate.
And one handwritten sentence from her mother.
"Emily... if you're reading this, you are not David Carter's biological daughter."
Emily's heart stopped.
The handcuffs clicked shut behind David...
But suddenly...
May you like
The biggest secret of all had nothing to do with him.
