CHAPTER 5: The Final Message Before the Empire Exploded

Richard's thumb hovered over the detonator.

His smile was cold.

"So this is how the Whitmore family ends."

Michael—once known as Ethan—didn't move.

He stared directly into his uncle's eyes.

"You've been trying to kill me since I was five."

Richard laughed.

"And I almost succeeded."

He pressed the button.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion tore through the underground garage.

The entire hotel shook.

Windows shattered.

Guests screamed as smoke poured through the lower floors.

Police officers rushed to evacuate everyone.

Richard's SUV sped into the night.

He was gone.

Michael turned toward Eleanor.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Then she looked at the burning garage.

"He wasn't trying to destroy the hotel."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

"He was trying to destroy something hidden beneath it."

Eleanor reached into her coat and pulled out a worn brass key.

"The family vault."

She whispered,

"Come with me."

Ignoring every warning from firefighters, Eleanor led Michael through an old service corridor hidden behind the ballroom stage.

They descended a narrow staircase no employee even knew existed.

Smoke filled the air.

The walls trembled with every aftershock.

Finally...

They reached an enormous steel door.

Carved into it were the words:

WHITMORE PRIVATE ARCHIVE

Eleanor inserted the brass key.

The ancient lock clicked open.

Inside wasn't gold.

It wasn't cash.

It was room after room of shelves filled with boxes, files, photographs, and videotapes.

Michael looked confused.

"I thought this was the family fortune."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"No."

"This is the truth."

She handed him a thick file marked:

PROJECT PHOENIX

Inside were newspaper clippings from twenty-one years ago.

Insurance records.

Hospital reports.

DNA files.

And one photograph that made Michael stop breathing.

It showed Richard...

Standing beside the burning Whitmore mansion.

But the timestamp was impossible.

The photo had been taken...

Ten minutes before the fire even started.

Michael slowly looked up.

"He planned it."

Eleanor nodded.

"He burned his own family alive."

Before Michael could process another word...

A small red light began flashing on the ceiling.

Then came a robotic voice.

WARNING.

SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE ACTIVATED.

TEN MINUTES UNTIL TOTAL VAULT COLLAPSE.

Michael's face drained of color.

"He planted explosives down here too."

Eleanor closed the file and placed it into Michael's hands.

"You have to leave."

"What about you?"

She smiled gently.

"I've lived a full life."

"You haven't."

Michael grabbed her arm.

"I'm not leaving without you."

Suddenly...

A weak voice echoed from the darkness.

"Mom..."

Both of them froze.

Another voice.

Barely audible.

"Help..."

Michael turned his flashlight toward the back of the vault.

Behind a collapsed shelf...

A man covered in blood slowly lifted his head.

Eleanor dropped the file.

Her entire body trembled.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The injured man whispered one final sentence before losing consciousness.

"Eleanor..."

"...I'm your husband."

The husband everyone believed had died in the mansion fire...

Was alive.

Hidden underground.

For twenty-one years.

And outside...

Richard's helicopter was already circling back.

He wasn't escaping anymore.

He was returning...

May you like

To make sure no one left the vault alive.

To Be Continued...
