Chapter 8 - The Ultimate BetrayalThe kiss was fierce, desperate, and terrifyingly tenderāa collision of two completely different worlds. Harper gasped softly against his lips, her hands reaching up to grip the lapels of his shirt, pulling him closer as if anchoring herself against a storm.

Outside, in the secure perimeter of the safehouse, Cole Barrett was monitoring the security cameras when his terminal suddenly flashed red.
Warning: Encrypted Data Breach. Source: Internal Terminal 42.
Coleās blood ran cold. He tapped his comm-link. āBoss. We have a breach.ā
Adrian pulled back slowly, resting his forehead against Harperās, his breathing ragged. He pressed his earpiece. āExplain.ā
āItās not the Morettis,ā Cole said, his voice tight with disbelief. āItās someone inside our own financial division. Someone just transferred thirty million dollars from the offshore accounts to an untraceable Swiss routing number... and the digital signature belongs to Marcus Vanceās administrative override.ā
Adrianās eyes snapped open. The romantic haze vanished instantly, replaced by the chilling focus of an apex predator.
āMarcus is dead in the water,ā Adrian growled. āHe doesn't have the clearance for a thirty-million-dollar transfer.ā
āHe didnāt act alone,ā Cole replied. āThe override was keyed in from the fourteenth-floor design office using a secondary administrative token... the one that was just assigned to Harper Lane today.ā
Adrian slowly turned his head to look down at Harper.
Harper was staring at him, her face pale, her eyes wide with genuine shock.
āI didn't do it,ā she whispered. āAdrian, I swear to God, I was here with you.ā
āYou left your canvas bag on your desk when we went to the warehouse,ā Adrian said, his voice dangerously low.
āI... yes, I did.ā
The silence in the safehouse became absolute, thick enough to choke on.

Adrianās hand drifted slowly toward the holster beneath his arm. The cold, hard logic of the criminal underworldāthe world that had kept him alive through a hundred betrayalsāscreamed at him to trust no one. Not even the woman he had just kissed.
āCole,ā Adrian commanded quietly into his comms. āLock down the fourteenth floor. Bring me whoever touched that terminal. If it was her... Iāll handle it myself.ā
