CHAPTER 1 – "The Prisoner Everyone Mocked"

The first thing they noticed about Ethan Cole wasn't his size.

It was how calm he was.

On his first day inside Blackridge Federal Prison, while murderers screamed across the cafeteria and gang leaders fought over territory, Ethan quietly ate his lunch without saying a single word.

"Fresh meat," someone laughed.

"You've got twenty-four hours before you're crying."

Even the correctional officers ignored him. To them, he looked like another white-collar criminal who wouldn't survive a week.

Only Captain Ross, the oldest prison guard, kept staring.

He had seen thousands of inmates.

Something about Ethan didn't fit.

His prison file was unusually thin.

No family listed.

No previous record.

No visitors.

No explanation about why a federal judge had personally sealed half the documents.

Ross frowned.

People like that were either harmless...

...or extremely dangerous.

Meanwhile, the prison's most feared gang leader, Marcus Kane, watched Ethan from across the cafeteria.

Marcus controlled everything.

The food.

The cigarettes.

The protection payments.

Nobody sat without his permission.

Yet Ethan had unknowingly taken the only empty chair at Marcus's table.

The cafeteria fell silent.

Marcus slowly stood up.

"You know whose seat you're in?"

Ethan looked up calmly.

"I was just looking for somewhere to eat."

The answer made everyone laugh.

Marcus smiled.

But it wasn't a friendly smile.

He slammed both hands onto the table, sending trays flying across the room.

"You either kneel..."

"...or leave here on a stretcher."

Every inmate stopped eating.

Even the guards refused to interfere.

This was Marcus's prison.

Everyone expected Ethan to beg.

Instead...

He calmly picked up his spoon.

Took another bite.

And said only six words.

"I'm not finished with my lunch."

The room exploded.

Marcus punched him across the face so hard the tray hit the floor.

Blood appeared on Ethan's lip.

Still...

He never fought back.

He simply wiped away the blood.

Then whispered,

"You really shouldn't have done that."

Marcus burst into laughter.

"So what?"

Ethan looked directly into his eyes.

"Because now...

someone far more dangerous than me is coming."

Nobody understood what he meant.

Until every alarm inside Blackridge Prison suddenly began screaming.

Red emergency lights flashed across every hallway.

Steel doors slammed shut automatically.

Armed tactical officers flooded the prison.

The loudspeaker echoed through the entire building.

"Emergency Protocol Seven activated."

"All inmates remain exactly where they are."

Captain Ross froze.

His face turned white.

Protocol Seven had only been activated once before...

...when a government asset disappeared inside a prison.

Then one terrified officer whispered words that made everyone's blood run cold.

"They're not locking the prison to keep someone in..."

May you like

"They're locking it...

to keep someone OUT."
