Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL OF THE INNER CIRCLEInside the high-security command center of the Durham estate, Emmett paced furiously across the polished marble floor. Water dripped from his tailored suit, but he didn't care. His face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

“Find them!” Emmett roared at his remaining head of security, a hulking ex-mercenary named Viktor. “Sweep every inch of the perimeter, every highway, every bus station, every airport hangar within a fifty-mile radius. They cannot have gotten far!”

Before Viktor could turn toward the door, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the private elevator foyer.

The heavy security doors slid open, revealing a figure stepping casually out of the cab. Dressed in an impeccably tailored Italian suit completely untouched by the rain, Julian Vance adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with a calm, unbothered smile.

Emmett stopped pacing. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

“Vance,” Emmett hissed, stepping toward the attorney. “You arrogant snake. You told me the server was secure. You told me the girl’s digital backup was contained.”

“And it was, Emmett,” Vance replied smoothly, walking toward the wet mahogany bar and pouring himself a glass of single-malt scotch. He didn't even flinch under Emmett’s murderous glare. “The server backup was wiped clean within three seconds of your notification. However... there is a minor complication you didn't account for.”

“What complication?” Emmett demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal growl.

“Lorelei wasn’t just a paranoid housewife,” Vance said, taking a slow sip of his scotch. “Before she died, she didn't just store files on a digital server or a physical drive. She deposited a hard-copy master vault container in a secure federal depository downtown—a container that can only be unlocked by two physical keys working simultaneously: the silver key currently in your daughter’s possession... and the gold signet ring worn exclusively by the senior partner of our firm.”

Emmett stared at the attorney, the color draining entirely from his face.

“If Rosalie reaches a public terminal and links that silver key to the federal depository protocol,” Vance continued, his voice losing its playful edge, “the vault doors open automatically, releasing original signed confessions, wire transfer logs, and physical evidence directly to a federal grand jury. A grand jury that I cannot bribe, because they are already assembling.”

Silence descended on the command center, heavier and more suffocating than the storm raging outside.

Emmett slowly turned toward Viktor. “Call every man we have on the payroll. Double the bounty. I don't care if they have to tear the city apart brick by brick.” Emmett’s eyes burned with madness. “Bring me my daughter. And bring me her husband's head.”
