CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY LAUGHED AT WAS THE REASON THE CAR EXISTED

Ethan Carter could barely breathe.
A minute ago, he had treated the elderly woman like a nuisance.
Now the CEO of one of the most powerful luxury car companies in the world was standing beside her like she was royalty.
The cameras turned toward her.
The billionaire guests leaned forward.
The little boy beside her looked confused.
“Grandma,” he whispered, “why is everyone staring?”
The old woman smiled gently.
“Because some secrets don’t stay buried forever.”
The CEO took the brass key from her hand with both palms, as if it were something sacred.
Then he turned to the audience.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, his voice shaking, “before we reveal this car, you need to know the truth.”
Ethan’s face went pale.
Truth?
What truth?
The CEO pointed to the vehicle covered in black silk.
“This model was not designed by our current team. It was built from blueprints created twenty-five years ago by one woman.”
He turned toward the elderly woman.
“Her name is Margaret Hayes.”
Gasps filled the ballroom.
One older investor suddenly stood up.
“That’s impossible,” he said. “Margaret Hayes died years ago.”
Margaret slowly looked at him.
“No,” she said softly. “That’s what my husband told the world.”
The room went dead silent.
Ethan felt a chill crawl down his spine.
Margaret stepped closer to the stage.
“Twenty-five years ago, I designed the engine that made this company famous. But before I could patent it, my husband stole my work, locked me out of the company, and told everyone I had suffered a breakdown.”
The crowd erupted in whispers.
Reporters lifted their microphones.
Flash after flash exploded across the room.
Margaret continued, her voice calm but powerful.
“He took my name off every document. He took my shares. He took my house. And when I refused to disappear, he told the board I was dead.”
The little boy beside her tightened his grip on her hand.
“Grandma…”
Margaret looked down at him.
“It’s okay, Noah. Tonight, they finally hear the truth.”
Ethan swallowed hard.
He suddenly remembered the old company legend: a mysterious female engineer who created the first revolutionary engine, then vanished before the company became a billion-dollar empire.
Everyone had assumed it was a myth.
But the myth was standing in front of them.
The CEO turned to Ethan.
“And you tried to throw her out.”
Ethan opened his mouth, but no words came.
Margaret didn’t look angry.
That made it worse.
She simply stared at him with the kind of disappointment that made a man feel small.
Then the CEO lifted the brass key.
“This key activates the original control system. No one else could open it because Margaret designed it herself.”
He placed the key into a hidden slot beside the car.
The ballroom lights dimmed.
The black silk slowly lifted.
Everyone gasped.
The car underneath was breathtaking.
A silver masterpiece.
Elegant.
Futuristic.
Like nothing the world had ever seen.
But then something unexpected happened.
The car’s screen lit up.
A video appeared.
It was old footage.
Margaret, much younger, standing beside her husband.
Her husband smiled into the camera and said,
“One day, this car will change the world.”
Then young Margaret looked directly into the lens and whispered,
“And if you’re watching this without me… it means he betrayed me.”
The entire ballroom froze.
Margaret’s husband appeared again in the footage.
But this time, he didn’t know the camera was still recording.
He was seen stealing documents from Margaret’s desk.
Then came his voice.
“She’ll never prove any of it.”
A reporter screamed,
“Keep recording!”
Ethan stumbled backward.
Investors began shouting.
Security rushed toward the exits.
But Margaret raised one hand.
“Wait.”
Everyone stopped.
She looked at the CEO.
“Show them the final file.”
The CEO hesitated.
“Margaret… are you sure?”
She nodded.
The screen changed again.
This time, it showed a legal document.
A hidden ownership contract.
Signed twenty-five years ago.
The company did not belong to Margaret’s husband.
It belonged to Margaret.
And after her death...
all controlling shares were supposed to pass to her grandson.
The crowd turned toward the little boy.
Noah.
Margaret gently placed her hands on his shoulders.
Ethan whispered,
“No way…”
Margaret looked at the entire ballroom and said,
“My husband stole this company from me. But he made one mistake.”
She smiled.
“He never knew I was still alive.”
Then the doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.
An old man in a wheelchair was pushed inside by two lawyers.
The room fell into chaos.
Margaret’s husband.
Alive.
Furious.
And terrified.
He pointed a trembling finger at her.
“You were supposed to stay gone.”
Margaret looked at him calmly.
Then she said the words that made every camera turn red-hot.
May you like
“I came back to take everything you stole.”
