Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

VIRAL HOOK: "I Found a Hidden Diary in the Billionaire’s Closet, and My Fiancé’s Name Was on the First Page!"
"Sophia, it's just the wind," Isabelle whispered, though her own heart was hammering. She gently took the flashlight from the little girl's hand and guided her back to the nursery.
After tucking the twins back into their matching canopy beds, Isabelle stood in the center of the dark room. Her mind was racing. The East Wing. A crying woman. The rhythmic clicking. Was Julian keeping someone locked in there? Or was grief playing tricks on the young girls' minds?
Over the next two weeks, Isabelle fell into a comfortable routine. She taught the girls art, painting vibrant landscapes with watercolors. For the first time in months, Sophia and Olivia laughed, their bright voices filling the gloomy halls of Vance Manor. Even Julian seemed to soften, his stony gaze lingering on Isabelle a little longer during dinners, though he remained fiercely distant.
But the mystery of the mansion refused to let Isabelle rest.
One afternoon, while the girls were napping, Julian left the estate for a high-profile board meeting in the city. Isabelle was tasked with organizing the library. While shelving a massive leather-bound volume on the highest shelf, her fingers brushed against a hidden latch in the wood paneling.
With a soft click, a secret compartment popped open.
Inside lay a dusty, velvet-covered diary.
Isabelle’s hand trembled as she pulled it out. She knew she shouldn't look. She knew Rule Number Three: Never ask about the late wife. But curiosity, fueled by the unsettling noises at night, won. She opened the diary.
The handwriting was elegant, slanted, and frantic. It belonged to Clara Vance.
October 14th, the first entry read. Julian thinks I am losing my mind. He doesn't believe me when I say we are being watched. He thinks the threat is outside, but it is already in our home. I can't trust anyone. Not even the staff.
Isabelle flipped through the pages, her chest tightening. Clara’s entries grew increasingly paranoid, speaking of a "shadow man" who was slowly draining their family assets and poisoning Julian’s mind against her.
Then, Isabelle reached an entry dated just one week before Clara’s fatal "car accident."
I found him. The man who is helping my sister Evelyn destroy us. He is a con artist. A master manipulator who preys on vulnerable women to steal their identities and bank accounts. His real name isn't what he told me. His name is Derek Vance... no, Derek Hayes. He goes by Derek Sinclair.
Isabelle dropped the diary. The room felt like it was spinning.
Derek.
Her ex-fiancé. The man who had ruined her life, stolen her money, and framed her for his financial crimes. He wasn't just a random thief. He was connected to Clara Vance’s death. He had been working with Clara’s sister, Evelyn.
Suddenly, a cold hand clamped down on Isabelle’s shoulder.
She screamed, spinning around.
Julian stood there, his face contorted in absolute fury. He looked at the fallen diary on the floor, then up at Isabelle’s pale face.
"What did I tell you about digging into the past?" Julian roared, his voice shaking the very walls of the library.
"Julian, please, listen to me!" Isabelle pleaded, using his first name for the first time. "It’s Derek! My ex-fiancé—he was here! He knew your wife. He was working with your sister-in-law, Evelyn!"
Julian’s eyes widened, a mixture of shock and sheer rage washing over his face. He grabbed Isabelle by the arms, his grip tight but not painful. "How do you know Evelyn?"
"I don't! But it's written in Clara's diary! Derek is the one who set me up. He stole my identity to access accounts. If he was here, he was doing the same to your family!"
Before Julian could answer, the heavy double doors of the library swung open.
"Well, well. What a touching family portrait," a sharp, mocking voice echoed through the room.
Isabelle turned. Standing in the doorway was a striking woman dressed in a pristine white designer suit. She had sharp, fox-like eyes and a cruel smile.
"Evelyn," Julian spat, his grip on Isabelle tightening protectively.
Evelyn walked into the room, her high heels clicking loudly against the hardwood floor. Click. Click. Click.

Isabelle’s breath caught. It was the exact same rhythmic clicking sound she had heard from the locked East Wing.
"I see you’ve hired a new maid, Julian," Evelyn sneered, looking at Isabelle with pure disgust. "Or should I say... a fugitive? I wonder what the police would say if they knew the infamous, fraud-wanted Isabelle Hayes was hiding in your house, playing mommy to my nieces."
