CHAPTER 5 — THE PRISONER WHO WAS NEVER ARRESTED

Margaret couldn't believe what she was seeing.

Ethan stood beside Vanessa...

Still wearing the same silver handcuffs.

Yet there wasn't a single police officer in sight.

The officers who had arrested him less than two hours earlier had simply...

Vanished.

Samuel whispered, almost to himself.

"They've already infiltrated the system."

Vanessa stepped forward, her high heels crunching across the gravel.

"You always underestimated us, Margaret."

"You thought Ethan married me because he loved me?"

She laughed.

"He met me years before either of you knew."

Ethan lowered his head.

For the first time since his arrest...

He spoke.

"I never wanted your love."

"I only wanted what was underneath Caldwell Tower."

Margaret felt the world spin.

"What is underneath my company?"

Vanessa smiled.

"You still don't know?"

She snapped her fingers.

One of the armed men carried a weathered blueprint toward them.

It wasn't a blueprint of the skyscraper.

It was a map...

Of something buried nearly two hundred feet underground.

Beneath Caldwell Group.

Samuel's face instantly lost all color.

"No..."

Vanessa nodded.

"Oh yes."

"The Vault."

Margaret frowned.

"There is no vault."

Samuel slowly turned toward her.

"There is."

Richard never told you because he promised your father he would protect it forever."

Margaret stared at him in disbelief.

"My father?"

Samuel nodded.

"During the Cold War, your father secretly created an underground archive."

"It doesn't contain gold."

"It doesn't contain diamonds."

"It contains names."

Margaret's heartbeat thundered.

"What names?"

Samuel answered quietly.

"The names of every politician, billionaire, judge, crime boss, and intelligence officer who secretly financed illegal operations over the last fifty years."

"If those files become public..."

"Governments would fall."

Vanessa smiled wider.

"Exactly."

"That's why Ethan never cared about inheriting your money."

"He only needed legal ownership of the building."

"So we could enter the vault."

Suddenly...

The sound of helicopters filled the sky.

Margaret looked up hopefully.

The FBI?

The military?

No.

Every helicopter was painted completely black.

No national flag.

No registration numbers.

Only a silver emblem.

A snake wrapped around a crown.

Samuel's hands began shaking.

"They're here..."

Margaret whispered,

"Who are they?"

Samuel looked straight into her eyes.

"The people who killed Richard."

"The people who created Ethan."

"And the people who have controlled this country from the shadows for decades."

One helicopter landed only yards away.

The door slowly opened.

Everyone—even Vanessa—bowed their heads.

A pair of polished black shoes stepped onto the ground.

Then a calm, elderly voice echoed through the night.

"Margaret Caldwell..."

"I've been waiting thirty-five years to meet the woman who stole my son."

Margaret froze.

The old man smiled...

And held out another DNA report.

This one revealed a truth so horrifying that even Samuel had never known.

Ethan wasn't just planted inside the Caldwell family...

He was the biological grandson of the mysterious leader standing before them.

And suddenly...

Margaret realized she had never been fighting one greedy son.

She had been fighting an entire dynasty.
