CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN WHO SACRIFICED HIMSELF WASN'T THE ONE THEY EXPECTED

The countdown echoed through the underground vault.

04:58...

04:57...

Red emergency lights flooded the tunnels.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Concrete groaned as hidden explosives armed themselves one by one.

For thirty-five years, Richard Caldwell had prepared for this exact moment.

If the Ashford Organization ever recovered Project EVE...

No one would leave with its secrets.

Vanessa grabbed Ethan's arm.

"We have to go!"

"Forget them!"

"We still have enough time to escape!"

But Ethan didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on Margaret.

The woman he had hated his entire life.

The woman he had tried to murder only hours earlier.

Every lie he'd ever believed was falling apart.

"You..."

His voice cracked.

"You really saved me?"

Margaret nodded through tears.

"Your father carried you out of that laboratory."

"He knew Ashford would never stop hunting you."

"So we erased every record of your existence."

"We didn't steal your life, Ethan..."

"We gave you one."

The countdown reached...

03:41

Suddenly, the Ashford leader pulled a pistol from his coat.

"Enough."

"If I can't have the vault..."

"No one will."

He aimed directly at Margaret.

Before he could pull the trigger—

BANG!

A single gunshot echoed through the tunnel.

The old man staggered backward.

Blood spread across his chest.

Everyone turned in shock.

Samuel was holding the smoking pistol.

For decades he had carried the weight of helping build the Ashford Organization.

Now...

He had finally chosen a side.

The old man collapsed to his knees.

He looked at Samuel with disbelief.

"You betrayed your own family..."

Samuel's eyes filled with tears.

"No..."

"I betrayed humanity the day we created this organization."

"And today..."

"I'm ending it."

But victory lasted only seconds.

Another explosion rocked the tunnel.

Huge slabs of concrete crashed down.

The escape route behind them collapsed.

Samuel looked at the cracked ceiling.

Then at Margaret.

Then at Ethan.

Only one narrow maintenance passage remained open.

It was too small.

Too unstable.

Only three people could make it through before it collapsed forever.

There were four of them.

Margaret.

Ethan.

Vanessa.

Samuel.

Vanessa immediately pushed Margaret aside.

"I'M NOT DYING HERE!"

She sprinted toward the exit.

Halfway there...

The ground split open beneath her.

She screamed as the collapsing floor swallowed her into darkness.

Her voice echoed only once...

Then disappeared forever.

Silence.

Ethan instinctively ran toward the hole.

But Samuel grabbed him.

"She's gone."

"We don't have time."

The timer flashed...

01:12

Samuel smiled sadly.

"I always knew this day would come."

He reached into his pocket and removed Richard's old pocket watch.

"I promised your father someone would stay behind..."

"...to make sure the vault was destroyed."

Margaret's eyes widened.

"No."

Samuel gently placed the watch into Ethan's hand.

"Take care of her."

Then he looked at Margaret one last time.

"I couldn't save Richard."

"But I can still save his family."

Before either of them could stop him...

Samuel slammed the massive steel emergency door shut.

The lock engaged instantly.

The blast-proof barrier separated him from the others forever.

Margaret pounded desperately on the door.

"Samuel!"

"Please!"

On the other side...

Samuel leaned against the wall, smiling peacefully.

For the first time in decades...

He was no longer running from his past.

He whispered softly,

"Goodbye, my friends."

The timer reached...

00:00

A blinding explosion ripped through the mountain.

The entire underground vault collapsed into itself.

Miles above, the earth shook like an earthquake.

The headquarters of the Ashford Organization disappeared beneath thousands of tons of rock...

Along with every classified file.

Every weapon.

Every secret.

And Samuel Cross.

Hours later...

As dawn broke over the mountains, rescue teams searched the ruins.

Margaret and Ethan sat silently beside each other.

Neither of them spoke.

Then a firefighter approached carrying something he had found beneath the rubble.

It was Richard's old pocket watch.

Still ticking.

Inside the cover was a tiny handwritten message no one had noticed before.

It read:

"If you're reading this... the real truth is somewhere they will never think to look."

Margaret frowned.

"There are more secrets?"

Ethan carefully opened the watch again.

Hidden beneath the gears...

Was a tiny memory card.

Only one file was stored on it.

The filename sent chills through both of them.

PROJECT ADAM — STATUS: ACTIVE

Margaret whispered,

"I was Project EVE..."

Ethan slowly looked up.

"Then..."

"...who is Adam?"

At that exact moment, somewhere thousands of miles away...

A young man opened a safety deposit box.

Inside was a passport.

A birth certificate.

And a photograph of Richard Caldwell holding a little boy.

On the back of the photo were six handwritten words:

"Protect him. He is the last one."

May you like

The young man smiled...

As if he had been expecting this day all along.
