Chapter 1 - THE NET CLOSES

“He’s currently sitting in Interview Room 3 at the downtown precinct, ma’am,” Sergeant Christopher’s voice snapped through the phone line, sharp and laced with controlled fury. “He walked in voluntarily twenty minutes ago, acting like the concerned, shattered husband. Brought a travel mug of coffee and everything. Kept telling the desk sergeant that I needed to be investigated for harassment because I was grilling him about a routine domestic fall.”
I looked down at my mother, her chest rising and falling in a shallow, rhythmic pattern under the hospital blanket. The silver-streaked hair, the frail wrists, the terrifying bruises mapped across her ribs—they weren't accidents. They were a signature left by a man who thought he could hide behind a corporate smile and a clean suit.
“Did you read him his rights, Sergeant?” I asked, my voice chilling the air around me.
“Not yet, Lieutenant Colonel. We wanted clearance from you. Technically, he’s just ‘assisting with inquiries’ at the moment.”
“Don't let him move an inch,” I instructed, my tactical mind shifting into overdrive. “Seize his phone immediately. Warrant or no warrant, if he reaches for a burner or tries to wipe his cloud data while you’re walking down that hallway, consider it a security breach. I’m four minutes away from my vehicle. I want every single piece of digital evidence mirrored, time-stamped, and cross-referenced with his vehicle’s GPS by the time my boots hit your precinct floor.”
“Understood, Colonel. We’ve got two officers stationed outside Interview Room 3 right now. He’s not going anywhere.”
I hung up the phone and gently laid my mother’s hand back onto the crisp white sheet. I leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. Her eyes flickered open, heavy with sedatives.
“Kelsey… where are you going?” she murmured, her voice trembling. “Don't leave me here alone with him… he’ll find a way out…”
“He’s not finding a way out of anything, Mom,” I whispered, my eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unshakeable resolve. “Rest. When you open your eyes next, the monster who did this won't have a shadow left to hide in.”
I turned on my heel, the heavy combat boots I’d worn straight from the airfield striking the linoleum with rhythmic, authoritative authority. The hospital doors hissed open, welcoming the damp, biting Baltimore night air. As I slid behind the steering wheel of my matte-black SUV, my phone lit up with a text notification from an encrypted military intelligence channel.
