Chapter 4 - THE DEEPER CONSPIRACY

As Ryan was dragged down the sterile hallway toward holding, shouting incoherent pleas over his shoulder, Sergeant Christopher and I remained behind in Interview Room 3. The silence that followed felt heavy, thick with the lingering scent of cheap coffee and institutional cleaning products.
The sergeant dropped a thick manila folder onto the table, sliding it across to me.
“You might want to take a look at this, Colonel,” Christopher said, his voice dropping to a somber, conspiratorial tone. “We didn't just find domestic financial troubles on his phone. We found a secondary communication channel. Encrypted messaging app. Someone else was coaching him.”
My tactical instincts instantly flared. I flipped open the folder. Inside were printouts of chat logs between Ryan and an unknown contact using the handle ‘Viper_99’.
“Make it look like a break-in gone wrong,” the messages from Viper_99 read. “If the mother dies of her injuries, the estate probate triggers immediately under the primary beneficiary clause. Kelsey gets distracted by the funeral, and you clear out the safety deposit box before the military auditor runs her annual clearance check.”
I stared at the screen printouts, my blood running cold. This wasn't just a panicked, heat-of-the-moment assault by a desperate gambler. This was a premeditated assassination and financial execution coordinated by a third party who knew intimate details about my military clearance and my family trust.
“Who the hell is Viper_99?” I demanded, looking up sharply at the sergeant.
“That’s the catch, Colonel,” Christopher replied, shaking his head grimly. “The IP address bounces through three different proxy servers based out of Zurich, Switzerland. But we ran a reverse trace on the financial routing numbers attached to the wire transfers Ryan received. The money didn't come from a random shell company. It came from an account managed by Apex Global Security—a private military contracting firm.”
A shiver raced down my spine. Apex Global Security.
That was the exact private contractor firm where I had interned and later investigated a massive embezzlement scheme five years ago—right before I transferred over to active-duty military intelligence. One of the senior directors at Apex back then had been a ruthless, calculating operative named Marcus Vance—no relation to Ryan, but a man who knew my entire service record inside and out.
“Marcus,” I breathed, the pieces of a much larger, darker puzzle snapping into alignment with terrifying clarity.
“You know this guy?” Christopher asked, leaning forward.
May you like
“He’s not just a guy,” I said, standing up abruptly, the heavy combat boots scraping loudly against the floor. “He’s a ghost who’s been trying to bury my career for half a decade. Ryan wasn't acting alone, Sergeant. He was a pawn in a much larger chessboard, and Marcus is trying to eliminate every loose end that could lead back to his corporate syndicate.”
Before Christopher could answer, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. It wasn't a text message. It was an emergency priority alert from the Baltimore Central Hospital.
