Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pawn

"Clara, put your coat on. Now," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a sharp, urgent whisper.

"What? What is it?" Clara’s head whipped around, her eyes widening in terror as she spotted the two men.

"Lily, grab Bella's hand. We're going out the back," Marcus ordered, sliding out of the booth and throwing a handful of bills onto the table.

The two men spotted them moving and broke into a run.

"Stop! Police!" one of them shouted, pulling a badge from his pocket.

Marcus froze. Police?

Before he could react, the back door of the diner burst open. Three more armed officers in tactical gear rushed in, their weapons raised.

"Hands in the air! Get on the ground! Now!"

"Daddy!" Lily screamed, grabbing Marcus's leg. Bella shrank back under the table, wailing in terror.

"Don't shoot! There are children here!" Marcus roared, throwing his hands up and stepping in front of the girls. He looked at the lead officer, a stern man with a silver shield that read Detective Miller. "What is the meaning of this? I am Marcus Davis. I am a business owner in this city—"

"Save it, Mr. Davis," Detective Miller said, stepping forward with a pair of handcuffs. "We received an emergency call from a family representative. You are under arrest for the kidnapping of Clara Sterling and her daughter, Bella."

"What?!" Clara screamed, struggling as another officer grabbed her arms. "No! He didn't kidnap us! He helped us! It's Arthur Vance! He's trying to—"

"Ma'am, you are clearly under distress," Miller said smoothly, his face an unreadable mask of corrupt compliance. "We have a court order signed by Judge Henderson declaring you temporary mentally unfit, and granting immediate protective custody of your daughter to her legal guardian, Julian Thorne."

From behind the police officers, Julian stepped into the diner. He wasn't wearing his sunglasses now. His eyes were bright with triumph. He looked at Clara, then at Bella, who was being pulled out from under the table by a female officer.

"No! Mommy! Mommy, help me!" Bella screamed, her tiny fingers slipping away from Clara’s reaching hands.

"Bella!" Clara shrieked, fighting against the handcuffs with a frantic, animalistic strength. "Julian, you monster! Don't touch her!"

Marcus watched in absolute horror as Julian stepped up to Bella, kneeling down with a fake, sickeningly sweet smile. "It's okay, sweetheart. You're safe now. We're going to get you some real food."

Marcus tried to lung forward, but two officers slammed him against the diner floor, pinning his face to the cold tile.

"You're making a mistake, Miller!" Marcus choked out, his cheek pressed against the floor. "Vance is using you! There’s an environmental cover-up! He’s framing her!"

"Keep quiet," Miller muttered, tightening the handcuffs around Marcus's wrists.

As they dragged Marcus out of the diner, he looked back. Lily was standing by the counter, crying hysterically as a social worker tried to comfort her. Across the room, Julian was leading a sobbing Bella toward his black SUV, while Clara was being shoved into the back of a police cruiser.

In a single, coordinated strike, Arthur Vance had taken everything.
