chapter 1

No one noticed the little girl standing alone at the edge of the park.

She couldn't have been older than eight.

Barefoot.

A simple white dress.

Tiny hands clutching an old leather wallet as if it were the last thing she had left in the world.

Hundreds of people walked past her without slowing down.

Until Ethan Carter, one of New York's most respected attorneys, happened to notice the tears running silently down her cheeks.

He checked his watch.

He was already late for the biggest court case of his career.

But something about the girl's frightened eyes made it impossible to walk away.

He knelt in front of her.

"Sweetheart... are you lost?"

The little girl didn't answer.

Instead, she slowly opened the worn wallet and held it out with trembling hands.

"There was a lady..." she whispered.

"She told me to give this only to you."

Ethan frowned.

"I've never met you before."

"I know."

"But she knew you."

Confused, Ethan opened the wallet.

Inside was only a single photograph.

The moment he saw it...

His heart stopped.

The woman smiling in the picture was Emma.

His wife.

The woman who had supposedly died in a boating accident eight years ago.

The same woman whose body he had personally identified.

The same woman he had buried with his own hands.

His fingers began to shake.

"This..."

His voice cracked.

"Where did you get this?"

The little girl's lips trembled.

"She's my mommy."

Everything around Ethan suddenly went silent.

The traffic...

The birds...

The voices in the park...

All disappeared.

He stared at the child.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

"My wife is dead."

The little girl slowly reached into her pocket again.

"I knew you wouldn't believe me."

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

On the front, written in familiar handwriting...

Only four words.

For Ethan. Open Alone.

Ethan froze.

There was no mistake.

It was Emma's handwriting.

Exactly the way she always wrote his name.

His breathing became uneven.

Every police report...

Every funeral...

Every tear...

Every lonely year...

Had it all been a lie?

Before he could unfold the letter...

A black SUV screeched to a stop beside the park.

Two men in dark suits jumped out.

Their eyes locked onto the little girl.

"There she is!"

The child's face instantly turned pale.

She grabbed Ethan's hand so tightly her fingers hurt.

"They found me..."

Her voice barely escaped.

"Please..."

"Don't let them take me."

The taller man reached inside his jacket.

Ethan instinctively stepped in front of the little girl.

"What do you want with her?"

The man smiled.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"You have no idea what you're protecting."

Then he looked directly into Ethan's eyes...

May you like

"...or who that little girl really is."
