CHAPTER 2: THE GIRL WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Ethan pushed the little girl behind him.
The two men in black suits moved closer.
Their faces were calm, but their eyes were empty.
Professional.
Dangerous.
The taller man lifted his hand slightly, showing a silver badge.
“We’re here for the child.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“What agency?”
The man smiled.
“The kind you don’t question.”
Ethan looked down at the little girl. Her entire body was shaking.
“She’s not going with you.”
The shorter man stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, you’re making a mistake.”
Ethan froze.
They knew his name.
Before he could answer, the little girl suddenly whispered, “Mommy said if they came… I had to run.”
Then she shoved the folded letter into Ethan’s hand.
“Read it.”
Ethan looked at the envelope.
His wife’s handwriting stared back at him like a ghost.
For Ethan. Open Alone.
The taller man’s voice turned sharp.
“Give us the letter.”
That was when Ethan knew.
This was not about a lost child.
This was about a secret someone was willing to kill for.
He grabbed the girl’s hand and ran.
Cars honked as Ethan pulled her across the street. The men chased them, shouting into hidden radios. Ethan ducked into an old subway entrance, dragging the child down the stairs as the train doors began to close.
“Move!”
They slipped inside just in time.
Through the glass, Ethan saw the two men stop on the platform.
One of them raised his phone.
And smiled.
The little girl buried her face against Ethan’s coat.
“They always find us.”
Ethan’s heart pounded.
“Who are you?”
She looked up at him with tearful hazel eyes.
“My name is Lily.”
He swallowed hard.
“And Emma is your mother?”
Lily nodded.
“She said you were my father.”
The words hit Ethan harder than any punch.
He stepped back.
“No…”
Lily reached into her dress pocket and pulled out a tiny silver necklace.
Ethan’s knees almost gave out.
It was the necklace he gave Emma on their first anniversary.
Inside the locket was a photo.
Emma.
Ethan.
And a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
Ethan couldn’t breathe.
“She was pregnant…”
His voice broke.
“She told me she lost the baby.”
Lily shook her head.
“She lied because she was scared.”
“Scared of who?”
Lily looked around the train like someone might be listening.
Then she whispered one name.
“Your brother.”
Ethan’s blood went cold.
His brother, Victor Carter, was a billionaire businessman.
A man loved by the media.
A man who had paid for Emma’s funeral.
A man who had stood beside Ethan at the grave and cried.
Ethan opened the letter with shaking hands.
Inside were only a few lines.
Ethan, if Lily found you, it means I failed to keep her hidden. Do not trust Victor. He didn’t save me that night. He buried me alive. And if you want the truth, go to the house where we first said forever.
Ethan stared at the words.
His dead wife was alive.
His daughter had been hidden from him.
And his own brother was behind everything.
But at the bottom of the letter, there was one final sentence that made Ethan’s blood turn to ice.
The woman in your house is not your wife’s sister. She is the reason I disappeared.
Ethan’s phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed his brother’s name.
Victor.
Ethan slowly answered.
Victor’s calm voice came through the speaker.
“Brother… hand over the girl.”
Ethan said nothing.
Victor laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
Then his voice dropped into a whisper.
May you like
“Emma wasn’t the first woman I made disappear.”
