Chapter 6 - The Penthouse SanctuaryThe elevator ride to the penthouse felt like an ascent into another dimension.

Caroline stood inside the private, wood-paneled cabin, her hands tightly gripping Sunny’s leash. Beside her, Marcus stood in total silence, his jaw set, his gaze fixed on the digital floor numbers ticking upward. The air between them was thick with unspoken confessions, heavy with the terrifying reality of the world Marcus inhabited and the door he had just pulled her through.
Ding.
The doors slid open, revealing a space that took Caroline’s breath away.
The penthouse wasn't just an apartment; it was a fortress of glass, steel, and minimalist luxury. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic, breathtaking view of the entire city skyline stretching out beneath a bruised twilight sky. Polished concrete floors, modern leather furniture, and walls lined with rare art pieces and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves created an atmosphere of cold, sophisticated power.
"Bring her in," Marcus said quietly, stepping out of the elevator and gesturing for Caroline to follow.
Sunny trotted out onto the polished floor, her claws clicking softly as she immediately began exploring the expansive perimeter, sniffing the modern furniture with mild curiosity.
Caroline lingered near the elevator, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. "Why did you bring me up here, Marcus? If Victor Cosoff and his men know who I am, I'm not safe in my own apartment anymore, am I?"
Marcus stopped near the edge of the kitchen island, turning to face her. His expression was grave, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
"No," Marcus said bluntly, refusing to sugarcoat the danger. "You aren't safe down there. Victor is a desperate man. When my father died three years ago, the Cosoffs tried to seize our shipping lanes on the docks. I pushed them back. Ever since, they've been looking for leverage. By approaching you today, they showed their hand. They think you're my weak point."
"Am I?" Caroline whispered, the question slipping out before she could stop it.
The penthouse fell dead silent. The distant hum of city traffic miles below was the only sound in the vast room.
Marcus stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, he closed the distance between them. He walked with measured, deliberate steps until he stood just inches away. Up close, she could see the raw tension in his shoulders, the faint pulse beating at his temple, the sheer weight of a man who carried the lives of hundreds of people on his broad shoulders every single day.
"From the moment I watched that pathetic excuse of a man scream at you in your hallway," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, rough rumble that vibrated straight through her soul, "you became my business, Caroline. Whether you wanted to be or not."
He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping her cheek. His skin was warm against her cold skin, his thumb softly brushing across her cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear she hadn't realized was falling.
"I don't lose things that belong to me," Marcus whispered fiercely. "And I don't let people touch what is mine."
Caroline’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She should have pulled away. She should have reminded him that she was just a schoolteacher, that she didn't belong in this mafia underworld, that this was all a dangerous, cascading madness. But as she looked up into his dark, fierce eyes, all she felt was an overwhelming, terrifying wave of safety. For the first time in her life, she wasn't small. She wasn't an afterthought.
She leaned imperceptibly into his palm, closing her eyes.

"They're going to come back, aren't they?" she murmured.
"Let them," Marcus replied, his voice hardening into steel. "My security detail is sweeping your floor downstairs. This entire building is locked down. Nobody gets in here without my say-so. For the next few days, you stay here. With me."
