Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Penthouse"Stay behind me," Marcus commanded, his voice dropping into an absolute, lethal command.

In one fluid motion, he stood up, reached beneath the cushion of the sofa, and pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer tactical pistol, racking the slide with a sharp, metallic clack.

Caroline scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering against her ribs like a runaway train. Sunny let out a low, rumbling growl, pressing her body tightly against the back of Caroline’s legs, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere from peace to absolute war.

"Marcus—" she started, her voice shaking.

"Listen to me, Caroline," Marcus interrupted, turning to look her dead in the eye, his face carved from granite. "Go into the secure panic room behind my office. The biometric lock is programmed to your thumbprint now—I registered it yesterday. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice saying the passphrase: Aurelia."

"I'm not leaving you here!" she cried, the terror of losing him overriding her own fear.

"You are going to survive," Marcus said fiercely, grabbing her by the shoulders and giving her a firm, grounding shake. "Because if you don't, there is nothing left for me to protect. Go. Now!"

Before she could argue, the reinforced steel elevator doors at the end of the hall exploded inward with a deafening roar of C4 charges. A shockwave of smoke, dust, and shrapnel tore through the corridor as alarms screamed overhead.

"Go!" Marcus shouted, shoving her gently toward the hallway leading to his office.

Caroline grabbed Sunny’s leash, running as fast as her legs could carry her down the corridor just as the first heavy exchange of gunfire erupted in the main living room. Automatic weapons fire rattled against the concrete walls like hail hitting a tin roof, accompanied by shouts, shattering glass, and the terrifying pop-pop-pop of suppressed tactical weapons.

Reaching Marcus’s office, Caroline slammed her thumb against the biometric scanner set into the mahogany wall panel.

BEEP.

A heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a high-tech panic room lined with monitors, communication arrays, and emergency supplies. She hauled Sunny inside, slammed the heavy door shut behind them, and listened as the automated deadbolts engaged with a series of heavy, echoing thuds.

Inside the pitch-black monitor room, Caroline stared at the wall of security screens.

On screen four, she saw Marcus.

He was moving through the smoke-filled living room with terrifying, supernatural grace. He fired twice, dropping two of Cosoff’s heavily armored mercenaries before they could even raise their rifles. He vaulted over the back of the sofa, sliding across the polished floor as a hail of bullets shattered the panoramic windows behind him, sending shards of glass raining down like diamonds into the dark night sky forty stories below.

He was fighting like a demon—a man pushed to the absolute edge, defending his home, his life, and the woman cowering in his panic room.

Suddenly, on screen two, a dark shadow emerged from the stairwell lobby. Victor Cosoff himself stepped into the penthouse, holding a tactical shotgun, flanked by two remaining gunmen.

"Ashford!" Victor screamed over the echoing gunfire, his voice echoing through the ruined living room. "It's over! Give up the girl, and maybe I'll let you bleed out quickly!"

Marcus stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, his breathing controlled, his pistol locked onto Victor’s chest. Blood was trickling down the side of his temple from a flying glass shard, but his aim was dead steady.

"You stepped into the wrong building, Victor," Marcus said, his voice cutting through the smoke like a razor blade.

"We'll see about that!" Victor snarled, raising his shotgun—

BANG.

Marcus fired first.

The bullet struck Victor squarely in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending his shotgun clattering across the floor. Before Victor's guards could raise their weapons, Marcus dropped both of them with two rapid, flawless headshots.

Victor collapsed against a shattered pillar, clutching his bleeding shoulder, gasping for breath as Marcus stood over him, the barrel of the gun pressed coldly against the center of Victor’s forehead.

"It's over, Victor," Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Tell your family that if any one of them ever looks in Caroline's direction again, I won't just take your docks. I'll take your entire bloodline."

Within minutes, the penthouse was dead silent, save for the crackling of alarms and the rain pouring in through the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows.

Caroline stared at the monitor, tears streaming down her face, her hand pressed against the glass.

Marcus slowly turned his head, staring directly into the security camera lens of the panic room—straight into Caroline's eyes. As if he knew she was watching. As if he was telling her it was finally over.
