Chapter 4 - The Midnight Breach

At 2:00 AM, the city below was asleep, bathed in the neon glow of streetlights. Rain tapped rhythmically against the glass windows of Carter Memorial Hospital.

Inside the basement service tunnels, Elijah moved quietly, guided by Dr. Reed. Elijah had swapped his worn cardigan for a blue maintenance jumpsuit. In his hand, he carried a heavy steel wrench and an old brass key—a key he had kept on his ring for twenty years, meant for the master maintenance Override system he had designed himself when the building was constructed.

"The security cameras on the 4th floor were upgraded last month," Reed whispered as they reached the freight elevator shaft. "They use biometric scanners. Even my badge won't open the doors."

"They upgraded the electronics, Marcus," Elijah said with a subtle, grim smile. "But they forgot to change the emergency mechanical overrides. Arthur Vance was always too cheap to replace the foundational infrastructure."

Elijah inserted the heavy brass key into an unlabelled panel behind the elevator control box. He turned it hard to the left. A deep, metallic clunk echoed up the shaft. The digital display flickered, died, and was replaced by a manual override light.

The freight elevator creaked open on the 4th floor.

The floor was eerily quiet, lit only by blue emergency strip lighting. The smell of pine disinfectant was overpowered by a strange, chemical stench that burned Elijah’s nostrils.

They crept down the hallway, slipping past locked glass doors. Inside the rooms, Elijah saw rows of advanced life-support machinery, but what made his blood run cold were the patients inside.

They were children and young adults, hooked up to complex IV rigs pumping an unidentified dark-red solution into their veins. Monitored screens displayed erratic brain activity and heart rates.

"My God," Reed gasped, staring through a window. "These are unapproved phase-zero gene therapy trials. They are testing untested neurological drugs on humans!"

"Not just humans," Elijah said, his hand trembling as he pointed to a clipboard hanging on the wall of Room 408. "Look at the consent forms."

Reed stepped closer and read the document. "Signed by legal guardians... but the signatures are forged! These children were brought in through the charity intake system!"

Suddenly, a heavy electronic lock clicked behind them.

The corridor lights flashed bright fluorescent white.

"I must admit, Elijah, you are far more persistent than an old man with a weak heart has any right to be," a cold voice echoed down the hall.

Elijah turned slowly. Standing at the end of the corridor was Arthur Vance, flanked by four heavy-set men in black tactical gear. Standing right beside Arthur was Julian Vance, holding a high-tech syringe.

"You didn't really think a brass key from 2004 wouldn't trigger a silent alarm on my phone, did you?" Arthur sneered.
