Chapter 3 - THE FIRST MOVE

Viral Hook: The Caldwells thought they could threaten her into silence. But they didn’t know Adrien Vane had already put a price on their heads. The next morning, Olivia woke up to the smell of fresh coffee and pastries.

The guest suite was larger than her entire apartment. It was decorated in soft cream and gold tones, with a massive canopy bed and a balcony overlooking the sprawling, manicured gardens of the Vane estate. For a moment, she forgot where she was, imagining herself as a character in one of the romance novels she loved to write.

Then, the memory of the previous night came rushing back.

The ballroom. Ethan’s cruel laughter. The cold, lethal grip of Adrien Vane.

She quickly washed her face and dressed in the simple clothes she had worn the night before, feeling incredibly out of place in the luxurious room. When she stepped out into the hallway, Thomas was waiting for her.

“Good morning, Miss Carter,” the butler said with a polite bow. “Mr. Vane is expecting you in the dining room.”

She followed Thomas through the labyrinthine corridors of the manor, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer scale of the estate. The walls were lined with first-edition books, ancient maps, and classical paintings. It was the home of a man with highly refined tastes—and the unlimited resources to indulge them.

When she entered the dining room, she found Adrien sitting at the head of a long mahogany table. He was dressed in a casual black sweater, reading a leather-bound book while sipping dark coffee.

“Good morning, Olivia,” he said, not looking up from his book immediately. “Did you sleep well?”

“Better than I thought I would,” she admitted, taking a seat a few chairs away from him.

Adrien closed his book with a soft thud and looked at her. “You are sitting too far away. Move closer. I do not bite unless provoked.”

Olivia hesitated, then moved to the chair directly to his right. A maid immediately placed a plate of eggs benedict and a cup of coffee in front of her.

“We have a situation,” Adrien said, his tone turning businesslike. He slid a tablet across the table toward her.

Olivia looked at the screen. It was a local Chicago gossip blog. The headline read: “COWARDLY CAUGHT: Caldwell Holdings Heir Humiliated by Mysterious Tycoon at Royal Wedding.” There was a blurry photo of Ethan on his knees, clutching his wrist while Adrien stood over him.

“The media is having a field day,” Olivia whispered, her face going pale. “Ethan will be furious. His father’s company is built on reputation. This will ruin him.”

“It is already ruining him,” Adrien said calmly. “Caldwell Holdings’ stock dropped four percent this morning at the opening bell. Richard Caldwell has been trying to reach me since six in the morning. He has left seven voicemails.”

“Are you going to call him back?”

“No,” Adrien said, taking a sip of his coffee. “I do not negotiate with men who raise boys like Ethan. But it seems your ex-fiancé has decided to take a more direct approach to salvage his pride.”

Adrien tapped the tablet, switching the screen to a security feed.

Olivia gasped. The video showed her apartment building. Two men in dark jackets were standing outside her door, one of them picking the lock while the other kept watch.

“They broke into your apartment two hours ago,” Adrien said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “They ransacked the place. They were looking for you, Olivia. Or perhaps, something they could use to force you to return.”

Olivia felt a wave of nausea wash over her. “My… my notebooks. My laptop. Everything I have is in that apartment. It’s my entire life.”

“Nothing of value was lost,” Adrien said. “I had my men evacuate your belongings before they arrived. Your laptop, your books, and your clothes are already here, in the storage room of the east wing.”

Olivia stared at him, her mouth open in shock. “You… you did that? How did you know they would go there?”

“Because I know how men like Ethan think,” Adrien said. “He is weak. When a weak man is humiliated, he does not go after the person who hurt him. He goes after the person he thinks he can control. He thought he could find you, drag you back, and force you to make a public statement saying the entire incident was a misunderstanding.”

“I would never do that,” Olivia said fiercely, a sudden spark of anger replacing her fear.

“I know,” Adrien said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. “That is why I like you, Olivia. You have a spine. It has just been bent by years of abuse. But it is still there.”

He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers.

“This morning, Richard Caldwell offered to sell me a prime piece of riverfront real estate at half its market value if I agreed to release a joint statement with Ethan, claiming the ballroom incident was a friendly dispute that got out of hand.”

Olivia’s heart sank. She knew how the world worked. In the end, business always won. Adrien was a businessman, a mafia boss. A multi-million dollar real estate deal was worth far more than a girl who shelved books for a living.

“So… you’re going to take the deal?” she asked, her voice cracking. “You’re going to hand me back to them?”

Adrien’s eyes darkened, a flash of pure, unadulterated fury crossing his face before it vanished behind his mask of calm.

“Is that what you think of me, Olivia?” he asked, his voice dangerously low. “Do you think I can be bought with a piece of dirt by the river?”

“I… I don’t know,” she stammered. “Everyone has a price.”

“My price cannot be paid in currency,” Adrien said, standing up and walking to the large window overlooking the courtyard. He stood with his back to her, his silhouette imposing and dark. “I told Richard Caldwell that his son’s wrist was just the first payment. If Ethan ever steps within ten feet of you again, I will buy Caldwell Holdings, dismantle it piece by piece, and leave his family sleeping on the very streets they claim to own.”

Olivia stood up, her heart racing. “Adrien… why are you doing this? You’re putting your business, your reputation on the line for me. We just met.”

Adrien turned to face her. The sunlight streamed through the window, catching the sharp angles of his face, making him look like a dark god.

“Because, Olivia,” he said, his voice soft but filled with an undeniable promise, “the moment you grabbed my arm in that ballroom, you ceased to be a stranger. You became mine to protect. And Adrien Vane does not let anyone touch what is his.”

Before Olivia could process the weight of his words, the double doors of the dining room burst open.

Marcus, the driver and head of Adrien’s security, rushed in, his face tense.

“Sir,” Marcus said, breathing heavily. “We have a problem. The Chicago PD is at the front gate. They have a warrant for your arrest.”

Olivia gasped, clutching her chest.

Adrien didn’t even flinch. He simply looked at Marcus, his eyes turning to cold stone.

“On what charges?”

“Kidnapping,” Marcus said, looking at Olivia. “Ethan Caldwell has filed a police report claiming you abducted Olivia Carter against her will.”
