Chapter 1 - The Code in the Shadows

The bank was deathly quiet. The hum of the flickering fluorescent lights and the rhythmic blink-blink-blink of the emergency siren were the only sounds left.
The robber leaned in close, the cold edge of his knife reflecting the red alarm light. "Your dad?" he sneered, tossing his head back with a cruel laugh. "Where is your dad now, kid? Crying on the floor like the rest of these pathetic sheep?"
The boy, Leo, didn't flinch. His small chest rose and fell, but his eyes—clear, icy blue—never left the man's mask.
"My dad isn't here," Leo said softly. "He told me if bad men ever showed up, I had to tap the floor three times, look for the red light, and say the phrase."
The second robber, who was stuffing stacks of hundred-dollar bills into a black duffel bag near the teller counter, stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his eyes wide behind his balaclava.
"Wait..." the second robber said, his voice suddenly shaking. "Marcus... stop. Look at his wrist."
Marcus, the robber holding the knife, glanced down at the boy’s sleeve. Tucked just under the cuff of Leo’s blue jacket was a faded leather band with a heavy silver buckle—engraved with a crest of a coiled viper wrapped around a cracked skull.
Marcus froze. The color drained from the visible skin around his eyes. "No... That’s impossible. He’s dead. The Agency wiped his whole unit six years ago."
"He didn't die," Leo whispered. "He just went to sleep. And you just woke him up."
Before Marcus could react, Leo reached down and slammed his small foot against the polished marble floor—once, twice, three times.
Across the room, deep inside the bank’s secure server room, a silent circuit tripped. It wasn't connected to the police station. It wasn't connected to the security company. It was linked directly to a encrypted satellite terminal sitting in a dimly lit garage three miles away.
On a dusty workbench, a dark monitor flickered to life. A single line of red text began to scroll:
[PROTOCOL PHANTOM ACTIVATED: SUBJECT ALPHA-7 IS IN JEOPARDY]
Back in the lobby, Marcus panicked. He grabbed Leo by the collar of his jacket, lifting his small boots off the floor. "Where is he?! Where is Arthur?!"
Leo looked at Marcus with an unnerving calm. "He told me to tell you... look behind you."
May you like
Marcus snapped his head around. Standing right outside the heavy glass entrance doors of the bank was a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a faded brown leather jacket. He wasn't holding a gun. He was just standing there, rain dripping off his hair, holding a half-eaten green apple.
It was Arthur Vance. The ghost everyone thought was buried in a nameless grave six years ago.
