Chapter 8 - The Unexpected End

Before Sarah or any of her bodyguards could react, Leo slammed the heavy silver buckle down onto the exposed electrical junction box on the floor—the main power relay Arthur had purposely left unshielded during the house's construction as a last-resort trap.
SPARK! SHOCK!
A surge of 220 volts shot through the wet hardwood floor, electrified by the heavy rain leaking through the damaged roof.
The tactical boots of the six bodyguards—fitted with conductive steel shanks—instantly grounded the massive electric arc. The guards dropped to their knees, paralyzed by the shockwave, their weapons flying from their hands.
In that fraction of a second, Arthur didn't shoot Sarah.
He lunged forward, grabbed Leo, and threw both of their bodies through the floor-to-ceiling glass window out onto the wrap-around wooden deck outside!
CRASH!
They tumbled out into the pouring rain just as the cabin behind them exploded in a fiery inferno—Arthur had triggered the remote detonation of the bunker's fuel reserves!
BOOM!
The blast blew the roof off the cabin, throwing the hovering helicopters off balance in the massive thermal updraft.
Arthur pushed himself up off the muddy ground, coughing, his body bruised and bleeding. He reached out into the mud. "Leo! Leo!"
Through the thick black smoke and orange flames of the burning house, a figure emerged.
It wasn't Sarah.
It was Leo, standing in the rain, completely unharmed, holding a small black satellite tablet he had snatched from Sarah's coat during the chaos.
Arthur gasped, dragging himself over to his son. "Leo... are you okay? Where is your mother?"
Leo looked at the burning ruins of the cabin. The structure had completely collapsed into the underground bunker. There was no way anyone inside could have survived.
"She was wrong, Dad," Leo said softly, handing the tablet to Arthur.
Arthur looked at the tablet screen. It wasn't a control panel for the Agency. It was a master file system.
And at the very top of the screen, scrolling in green text, was the true revelation that made Arthur’s blood run cold:
[SUBJECT: ARTHUR VANCE] [STATUS: ACTIVE ASSIGNMENT] [MEMORY REPLACEMENT: SUCCESSFUL (CYCLE 4)] [PROJECT CHIMERA REALITY INDEX: 100%]
Arthur stared at the screen, his mind spinning, the world tilting around him.
He looked down at his hands—his scarred, calloused hands. He looked back at Leo.
"Dad?" Leo asked, his voice changing slightly—losing its child-like innocence, becoming flat, precise, and completely adult. "Do you remember who you were before Cycle 4?"
Arthur stumbled backward into the mud, clutching his head as a deafening high-pitched ringing rang inside his brain. Memories that weren't his flooded his mind—laboratories, glass tubes, surgical lights, and a voice saying: “Program the subject to believe he is a protecting father. It produces the most defensive combat instincts.”
Arthur wasn't the retired assassin protecting an engineered boy.
Arthur was the experiment.
Leo wasn't his son—Leo was his handler. The entire "bank robbery," the "dead wife," the "cabin in the woods"—it was all a live-field diagnostic test to see if Arthur’s conditioning as a supreme guardian asset would hold under extreme psychological trauma.
Leo walked over to Arthur, looking down at his "father" with a calm, analytical expression. He reached into his blue jacket, pulled out a small syringe, and pressed it gently into Arthur's neck.
"You passed the test, Arthur," Leo whispered softly into his ear as Arthur’s vision began to fade into absolute darkness. "Good job, Dad. See you in Cycle 5."

The rain continued to fall as a sleek, unmarked black stealth transport landed silently in the clearing. The doors opened, and a team of scientists in white biohazard suits stepped out, bowing respectfully to the seven-year-old boy.
Leo turned his back on the burning cabin, stepped onto the transport, and vanished into the night.
