Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

The commute back to the headquarters was a nightmare of adrenaline. Jonathan had fortified the SUV, loading a hidden compartment with his own security protocols. He looked over at Lily, who was tracing patterns on the window. She hadn't eaten, yet she felt warmer now, radiating a faint heat.
"Why me?" Jonathan asked, his eyes glued to the rearview mirror.
"Because you were the only one who didn't know," Lily whispered. "You were the distraction, Papa. You were busy making money, and they were busy making me."
They arrived at the monolith of glass that housed his company. Jonathan bypassed the lobby, taking the private freight elevator to the 80th floor. As the doors opened, he expected security. Instead, he found an empty floor. But the screens were all live.
Every computer monitor in the building was broadcasting a live feed of his past three years—his meetings, his private calls, even his moments of grief for Elena. It was a digital map of his failures.
He walked into his office, Lily holding his hand with a grip surprisingly strong. Sitting in his chair was not Thorne, but his own mother, Evelyn—the woman who had founded the company.
"Hello, Jonathan," she said, not turning around. "You’ve done well. You kept the stock prices high while we perfected the extraction process."
"You," Jonathan breathed, the horror sinking in. "You were part of this?"

"I am the architect," Evelyn stood up, her gaze shifting to Lily. "And you, darling, have a date with the lab."
Jonathan moved to intercept her, but security guards emerged from the walls—silent, efficient, and lethal. They weren't there to arrest him; they were there to harvest his daughter. Jonathan realized then that his wealth had never been his; it was the bait for a trap that had been set since the day he was born.
