CHAPTER 3 — "DADDY, I HID THE TRUTH WHERE THE BUTTERFLIES SLEEP."

At exactly 5:18 a.m., before the first rays of sunlight touched the vineyards surrounding the Mendoza estate, Santiago stood outside the abandoned greenhouse.

He had not slept.

Not after watching the surveillance footage of Mónica planting her own bracelet in the hallway.

Not after spending the entire night replaying every conversation he had ignored... every warning he had dismissed... every quiet expression on Laura's face that he had chosen not to understand.

The old greenhouse had once belonged to his late wife, Isabel.

She had loved orchids.

After her death, no one had the heart to care for it.

The glass roof was cracked.

Wild vines wrapped around rusted iron beams.

Dust covered every wooden shelf.

It looked less like a garden and more like a forgotten memory.

Santiago stepped inside.

The smell of damp soil instantly reminded him of happier years—days when Sofía laughed without fear and Isabel filled the house with music.

Then he noticed something.

One loose brick beneath a faded blue butterfly painted years ago by Sofía.

His pulse quickened.

He knelt and carefully removed it.

Behind the brick sat a small blue metal box.

Exactly as Laura and Sofía had hidden it during one of their treasure games.

His hands trembled.

He slowly opened the lid.

Inside...

There were no jewels.

No money.

Only the priceless treasures of a four-year-old little girl.

A dried daisy.

A tiny seashell.

Half a chocolate wrapper.

A friendship bracelet made from colorful yarn.

And...

A folded piece of paper.

On the front, written in oversized crooked letters:

"Daddy's Truth."

Santiago unfolded it carefully.

The drawing showed three people.

Him.

Laura.

Sofía.

They were holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

In the corner stood another woman with angry eyebrows, colored entirely in black crayon.

An arrow pointed toward her.

Below it, Sofía had written with Laura's help weeks earlier:

"The lady lies when Daddy can't see."

Santiago stared at the page.

His breathing stopped.

Children imagined monsters.

They didn't invent deception.

Unless...

They had seen something.

At that exact moment...

A branch snapped outside.

Santiago spun around.

Someone was running.

He rushed out of the greenhouse just in time to see a figure dressed in dark clothing disappear into the trees.

"Stop!"

The stranger sprinted toward the back road where a black SUV waited with its engine running.

Before Santiago could catch up, the vehicle sped away, spraying gravel across the narrow path.

He managed to memorize only one detail.

The license plate ended with 731.

Inside the mansion...

Mónica was sipping espresso when Santiago walked into the dining room.

His face was unreadable.

"You were up early," she said with a practiced smile.

"So were you."

Her smile froze for a fraction of a second.

"What do you mean?"

"I know someone was at the greenhouse this morning."

She laughed softly.

"The greenhouse?"

"I haven't been there in years."

Santiago simply nodded.

He didn't argue.

He didn't accuse her.

That frightened Mónica more than if he had shouted.

Because calm men asked dangerous questions.

Meanwhile, upstairs...

Sofía sat on the floor hugging Laura's old cardigan.

She hadn't spoken all morning.

When Santiago entered, she quietly looked at him.

He sat beside her.

"Sweetheart..."

"I found your treasure box."

For the first time in days...

She smiled.

A tiny one.

Barely visible.

"You found Daddy's truth?"

"I did."

She nodded proudly.

"I hid it because the bad lady watches."

Santiago felt a chill crawl through his body.

"What bad lady?"

Sofía lowered her voice to a whisper.

"The shiny lady."

That was how she described Mónica.

"Why did you hide it?"

The little girl looked around as if afraid someone might hear.

Then she leaned close to her father's ear.

"I saw her make pretend."

His heartbeat stopped.

"What do you mean?"

"The shiny lady cried..."

"...before she was sad."

Silence.

Santiago blinked.

Children often struggled to explain what they saw.

But sometimes...

Their innocence revealed truths adults overlooked.

"You saw her cry before she was sad?"

Sofía nodded.

"She looked in the mirror."

"Then she practiced."

"Then she came downstairs."

"And then she cried."

Every word hit Santiago like another hammer blow.

He remembered that morning perfectly.

Mónica had burst into the breakfast room sobbing about her "missing" bracelet.

Everyone believed her tears.

Except...

A four-year-old child had watched her rehearse them.

Across town...

Laura received an unexpected phone call.

"Miss Laura?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Rosa."

Laura immediately recognized the voice.

Rosa had worked as the Mendoza family's head housekeeper for nearly twenty years.

She sounded terrified.

"I shouldn't be calling."

"Then why are you?"

There was a long silence.

Finally Rosa whispered,

"Because what happened to you wasn't right."

Laura closed her eyes.

She had waited four days to hear someone say those words.

"I'm sorry."

"I can't explain everything over the phone."

"They're watching."

"They?"

"I think someone has been going through the staff quarters."

Laura frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"The night before you were fired..."

"...someone searched your room."

Laura's stomach tightened.

"What?"

"I found your dresser open."

"Your photo albums had been moved."

"I thought maybe you'd been looking for something."

"I wasn't."

Rosa's voice trembled.

"I didn't tell anyone because I was afraid."

Laura's pulse accelerated.

Someone had entered her room...

Before Mónica accused the staff of stealing.

Someone searching for something.

But what?

That afternoon...

Santiago requested copies of every security recording from the previous month.

When the technician returned twenty minutes later, his face was pale.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"Several files are gone."

"Gone?"

"They've been deleted."

"Which ones?"

The technician swallowed hard.

"Every recording from the servant wing..."

"...the night before Miss Laura was dismissed."

The room fell silent.

Security footage couldn't delete itself.

Someone with administrator access had erased it.

Only three people possessed that level of authorization.

Santiago.

The security chief.

And...

The temporary executive assistant hired three months earlier.

An assistant recommended personally by...

Mónica.

Late that night...

Mónica sat alone inside her luxury apartment.

She picked up her phone.

One message appeared on the encrypted app.

MISSION FAILED.

She typed back immediately.

Did he open the box?

Three dots appeared.

Then...

Yes.

Another message followed seconds later.

Phase Two begins tomorrow.

Mónica stared at the screen before slowly smiling.

"Poor Laura," she whispered.

"You still think this was about taking your job."

She looked toward a locked safe hidden behind an expensive painting.

Inside rested a thick brown envelope.

Across the front, someone had written in black ink:

CONFIDENTIAL — ISABEL MENDOZA

Mónica gently touched the envelope.

"If Santiago ever sees what's inside..."

"...he'll discover the secret his wife took to her grave."

She paused.

Then whispered the words that changed everything.

May you like

"And he'll learn why Laura had to disappear."

End of Chapter 3…
