CHAPTER 1 — THE DAY LOVE WAS MISTAKEN FOR BETRAYAL

The fourth morning after Laura disappeared began with a scream.
Not the playful cry of a child refusing breakfast.
Not the stubborn protest of a little girl avoiding school.
It was the terrified scream of a child who believed someone she loved had died.
"DADDY! DON'T LET THEM TAKE HER AWAY!"
The sound exploded through the marble halls of the Mendoza mansion before sunrise.
Santiago Mendoza jerked awake, nearly falling from the leather sofa in his study where he had spent another sleepless night pretending to work.
His heart slammed against his ribs.
"Sofía!"
He sprinted barefoot down the hallway, nearly colliding with two frightened housekeepers rushing toward the little girl's bedroom.
When he burst through the door, the scene stopped him cold.
Four-year-old Sofía was curled into the corner of her bed, clutching Laura's old knitted cardigan so tightly that her tiny fingers had turned white.
She wasn't looking at her father.
She wasn't looking at anyone.
She stared at the empty rocking chair beside the window.
As if someone invisible were sitting there.
"No..." she whispered between desperate sobs.
"Please don't leave again..."
Santiago slowly knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart... Daddy's here."
She flinched.
Not because she was afraid.
Because his voice reminded her of the day everything changed.
"Where's Laura?"
Her question barely rose above a whisper.
Santiago swallowed.
"You know she had to leave."
"No."
Her answer came instantly.
"No, she didn't."
The room became painfully quiet.
Even the servants stopped breathing.
Sofía looked directly into her father's eyes.
"You made her cry."
Those four words struck harder than any business failure Santiago had ever experienced.
His throat tightened.
"I..."
He reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
"You promised nobody would ever leave me again."
Another knife.
Three years earlier, Sofía's mother had died after a sudden brain aneurysm.
The little girl had waited for her mother to come home every afternoon for almost six months.
She kept placing a tiny stuffed rabbit by the front door because she believed Mommy would need someone to welcome her back.
When she finally understood death...
She stopped speaking for nearly seven weeks.
Laura had been the only person able to bring her voice back.
Not through therapy.
Not through medicine.
Through patience.
Through bedtime stories.
Through endless tea parties with stuffed animals.
Through lullabies sung softly when nightmares refused to end.
Laura hadn't simply cared for Sofía.
She had rescued her.
And now...
Santiago had taken her away.
That afternoon, the mansion felt colder than ever.
The cooks prepared Sofía's favorite enchiladas.
She refused to eat.
The gardener brought flowers she usually loved collecting.
She ignored them.
Her music teacher arrived.
She sat silently beside the piano without touching a single key.
By evening, she had spoken only seven words.
All of them about Laura.
"She'll think I forgot her."
The sentence echoed inside Santiago's mind long after Sofía had fallen asleep.
Would she?
Would Laura believe they had simply erased her?
He walked through the enormous mansion for hours.
Every room carried her fingerprints.
The tiny growth chart she had secretly drawn inside the pantry door.
The basket filled with Sofía's handmade crafts.
The children's books carefully organized by age.
Fresh flowers arranged in simple glass jars because Laura always insisted expensive vases intimidated children.
How had he never noticed how much of the house belonged to her spirit?
He stopped outside the playroom.
A single crayon rested beneath the little table.
Blue.
Laura's favorite color.
He bent down to pick it up.
Instead...
He found something folded underneath.
A drawing.
It had obviously been hidden in a hurry.
Three stick figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun.
One tall man.
One little girl.
One woman with long brown hair.
Above them, written in crooked children's handwriting:
My Forever Family
His chest tightened.
On the back, in Laura's careful handwriting, was a date.
Two weeks earlier.
She had written only one sentence.
"Sofía says families are built by love, not by blood. I hope she never forgets that."
Santiago felt his knees weaken.
She never intended anyone else to read it.
She hadn't signed her name.
She hadn't written a confession.
Only a memory she wanted Sofía to keep someday.
A tear rolled down his face before he realized he was crying.
Across town, Laura was trying to convince herself she no longer belonged to the Mendoza family.
Her apartment measured less than three hundred square feet.
The wallpaper peeled from the corners.
The refrigerator hummed louder than the traffic outside.
She unpacked her suitcase slowly.
Each item carried a memory.
A tiny plastic tiara.
A broken toy dinosaur.
A macaroni necklace Sofía had proudly declared was "worth more than diamonds."
Laura pressed it against her heart.
Her phone remained silent.
No calls.
No messages.
No explanation.
Three years...
Gone without goodbye.
She forced herself to search online for new nanny positions.
Every listing blurred through tears.
She couldn't imagine loving another child.
Not after Sofía.
A sudden knock interrupted her thoughts.
She wiped her eyes and opened the door.
Standing outside was an elderly courier holding a small white envelope.
"No return address," he said kindly.
"It was paid in cash."
Laura frowned.
She thanked him and carefully opened it.
Inside...
There was only one drawing.
Nothing else.
No letter.
No signature.
Just another picture made with thick crayons.
It showed a little girl standing alone in front of a giant house.
Rain poured from gray clouds.
Far away, a woman walked down a road carrying a suitcase.
Above the little girl were five heartbreaking words.
I'M STILL WAITING FOR YOU.
Laura's hands began trembling uncontrollably.
Only one person in the world drew tiny hearts instead of dots above the letter "i."
Only one child always colored rain purple instead of blue.
"Sofía..."
She whispered the name through tears.
But one question terrified her.
How had the drawing reached her?
Nobody outside the Mendoza estate knew where she lived.
Nobody...
Except someone inside the mansion.
Someone who had secretly been watching everything.
And at that exact moment, hidden behind the second-floor curtains of the Mendoza estate...
Mónica smiled.
She had expected Laura to disappear quietly.
Instead...
The little girl had just started a chain of events that would expose secrets buried long before Laura ever walked through the Mendoza gates.
And Mónica had already prepared her next move.
Because getting rid of the nanny...
Had never been her real objective.
Her true target...
May you like
Was Santiago Mendoza's entire fortune.
