Chapter 8 - The Forest RemembersThe trapdoor dropped three feet into a reinforced steel holding pen originally built beneath the foyer to hold rogue hunting hounds.

The sudden drop sent Julian stumbling backward. The dead-man's switch slipped from his thumb.

CLICK.

The explosive charge fired—not with a massive blast, but with a sharp, localized shockwave designed to shatter the floorboards. The glass cylinder in Julian's hand smashed against the metal grate below.

A thick, pale blue fog exploded into the holding pit.

Julian and his mercenaries let out horrific, wet screams as the airborne toxin instantly attacked their lungs. Within seconds, the thrashing stopped, replaced by total, heavy silence.

Above the pit, the room was untouched. The heavy glass partition of the holding pen had automatically sealed the gas below.

Alex stood near the kitchen doorway, breathing heavily, his hands resting on his knees.

Victoria pulled herself up from the couch, staring at the glass partition with wide, stunned eyes. She looked at Alex as if seeing a ghost.

"You... you knew about the hound pit," she whispered.

"You showed it to me five years ago," Alex said softly. "You laughed and said your father used to throw traitorous guards down there."

Victoria let out a breathless, crazy laugh. "Alex... you saved us. You saved the estate. We can fix this! We can clear the bodies, transfer the funds, start fresh—"

"No," Alex interrupted, pulling a second, small device from his pocket—the satellite uplink tablet he had snatched from Elena during the chaos in the bunker.

Victoria froze. "What are you doing?"

"I transferred the entire Vance fortune twenty seconds ago," Alex said, holding up the screen. "Not to my account. Not to yours. To a public non-profit fund for victims of corporate human trafficking. Every single cent."

Victoria’s face turned from relief to absolute, unadulterated fury. "You ruined us! You destroyed everything my family built!"

She reached down, grabbing the handgun Alex had dropped earlier, raising it toward his chest. "I should have let the wolf eat you in the woods!"

"You can try," Alex said quietly.

He didn't dodge. He didn't run. He simply pressed a red button on the tablet screen.

The heavy steel shutters over the main front doors didn't just open—they detuned completely, lifting entirely off their magnetic hinges and falling outward onto the snow with a deafening crash.

Standing outside in the freezing moonlight was the entire pack. Dozens of massive, glowing-eyed wolf hybrids stood in silence, looking into the warm, red-lit foyer.

At the front of the pack stood Fenris.

Victoria dropped the gun, her hands shaking violently. "Fenris... heel! Heel!"

The giant beast didn't heel. It stepped over the fallen steel door, its nose twitching as it smelled the blood on Victoria’s clothes.

"Fenris... I'm your master!" she screamed, her voice cracking with terror as she backed toward the wall. "I feed you! I command you!"

The wolf let out a long, haunting howl that echoed across the frozen mountain. The rest of the pack surged forward, rushing into the house like a flood of grey shadow.

Alex didn't look back.

He walked out through the open rear exit into the quiet, pristine snow. The cold air rushed into his lungs, sharp, painful, and pure. Behind him, the sounds of screaming and shattering glass faded into the vast, indifferent silence of the winter night.

He kept walking into the dark forest, leaving no trail behind.

💣 TWIST ENDING:Three months later, a viral news report covers the sudden, miraculous disappearance of the corrupt Vance family empire and the anonymous donation of 400 million dollars to charity.

In a small, sunlit coastal town halfway across the world, a man sits at a cafe, reading the newspaper article over coffee.

His phone buzzes on the table. A message appears from an untraceable contact:

“The pack is hungry again, Alex. When do we go back?”

Alex smiles, deletes the message, and takes a slow sip of his coffee. He was never the bait. He was the one who bought the wolf.
