Chapter 6 - THE FINAL PIECE OF THE BOARD

Hook: The ultimate twist. He thought he won the game, but she wrote the rules before they even met."Maya, please," Tanner begged, dropping the duffel bag and raising his hands. "I did it for us! I swear! Victor was going to kill me if I didn't help him get that database. I had to make it look real! I forced those pills on you because they were just mild sedatives, I swear! I wanted to keep you safe from Victor!"

"You wanted to keep yourself safe," I said, my voice steady, my finger tightening on the trigger. "You never loved me. You never loved our baby. You saw me as a ticket to a multi-million-dollar payout from Victor."

"That's not true! I love you, Maya! We can take this money and run! There's five million dollars in this bag! We can start over in Europe. Just the three of us. You, me, and the baby."

He took a step toward me, his hand reaching out, his eyes filled with a pathetic, desperate hope.

"You're right about one thing, Tanner," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "There is a baby. And she is going to have a wonderful life. But you won't be a part of it."

"Maya, don't do this—"

"I don't have to," I said.

I lowered my gun.

Tanner blinked, confused. "What?"

Suddenly, the bright floodlights of the warehouse flickered on, blinding us both.

"FBI! Don't move!" a voice boomed through a megaphone. "Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head!"

Dozens of armed tactical officers poured into the warehouse from every entrance, their red laser sights painting Tanner’s chest.

At the front of the line was Detective Reyes, his gun drawn.

Tanner spun around, panicked, looking for an escape route. But there was none. He was surrounded.

"You set me up," Tanner whispered, turning back to me, his eyes filled with pure betrayal. "You brought them here."

"I didn't just bring them here, Tanner," I whispered so only he could hear. "I've been working with the FBI’s Witness Protection Program for the last six months. They needed Victor Vance and Alejandro Vargas in the same room with the physical ledger to make the federal charges stick. You were the bait. I knew you would steal Victor's cash and run here."

Tanner stared at me, his mouth open in utter shock. "The... the marriage? The baby?"

"The marriage was a trap to get Victor to lower his guard," I said. "And the baby... she is real. But she’s mine. Only mine. You were just a means to an end."

Detective Reyes walked up, handcuffing a stunned, silent Tanner.

"You're under arrest for grand larceny, domestic abuse, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud," Reyes said, dragging Tanner away.

Tanner didn't fight back. He looked like a man who had just realized he had been playing chess against a grandmaster while he was still trying to figure out how the pieces moved.

As they dragged him out into the rain, Reyes turned to me.

"You did it, Maya," Reyes said, handing me a clean, new passport with a new name. "Victor's empire is gone. Vargas is in custody. Tanner is going away for life. You're free."

I took the passport, looking down at the photo of a smiling, confident woman.

"Thank you, Reyes," I said.

I walked out of the warehouse into the fresh, cool rain. I placed my hand gently on my stomach. The pain was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth.

We had survived.

I looked up at the night sky, a deep sense of peace washing over me. The storm had passed, and for the first time in my life, the future was entirely mine to write.
