CHAPTER 6: The Missing Girl Recognized Cooper Before Anyone Else

The photograph haunted Emma all night.
It showed Cooper standing beside a frightened little girl in the middle of thick smoke.
The date on the back matched the day of the devastating wildfire.
But there was something even stranger.
The little girl's face had been carefully scratched out.
As if someone had wanted to erase her identity forever.
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived with a thick case file.
"We've spent three years trying to solve this," he said.
"During the wildfire, one child disappeared."
"No body."
"No witnesses."
"Nothing."
Except...
One dog.
Cooper.
The detective placed several photographs on the table.
Most showed burned homes.
Collapsed trees.
Emergency crews.
Then Emma noticed something.
In every single photo...
Cooper was running in the same direction.
Away from the flames.
As if he was leading someone to safety.
"We think he rescued her," Detective Harris explained.
"But by the time firefighters reached the area, Cooper was alone."
The case had gone cold.
Until now.
The detective clipped a GPS tracker to Cooper's collar.
"If he remembers anything..."
"He may lead us back."
Hours later, Cooper suddenly stood up.
Without barking...
Without hesitation...
He started walking.
Past the neighborhood.
Across an abandoned bridge.
Into the remains of the old forest where the wildfire had begun.
Everyone followed in silence.
After nearly an hour, Cooper stopped beside a massive oak tree that had somehow survived the fire.
He began digging frantically.
Emma and the officers rushed over to help.
A few inches beneath the soil...
They uncovered a small rusted metal box.
Inside were a child's silver bracelet...
A tiny stuffed rabbit with one missing ear...
And a folded letter sealed inside a waterproof bag.
Detective Harris carefully opened it.
His face turned pale.
"What is it?" Emma whispered.
He couldn't answer.
Instead, he slowly handed the letter to her.
The first line read:
"If someone finds this... it means Cooper kept his promise."
Emma's hands began to shake.
Below the sentence...
Was a signature that made everyone's heart stop.
It wasn't written by an adult.
It was written in the uneven handwriting of a frightened little girl.
And beneath her name...
Was today's date.
Impossible.
Because according to every official record...
She had disappeared three years ago.
Yet somehow...
May you like
Someone had written that letter today.
The mystery had just become far darker than anyone had imagined...
