CHAPTER 7: The Truth About the Letter Changed Everything

The forest fell completely silent.

Emma read the letter again and again.

The handwriting belonged to a child.

But the date...

It was today's date.

"That's impossible," Detective Harris whispered.

The paper wasn't old.

The ink hadn't faded.

Someone had written it only hours earlier.

The officers immediately searched the surrounding woods.

Nothing.

No footprints.

No campsite.

No sign that anyone had been there.

Except Cooper.

The Golden Retriever stood perfectly still beneath the old oak tree, staring toward the mountains.

Then...

He started running.

"Follow him!" Harris shouted.

Everyone raced after Cooper through narrow trails until they reached a small abandoned cabin hidden deep in the forest.

The front door creaked open.

Inside, dust covered almost everything.

Almost.

One room looked... lived in.

A kettle was still warm.

Fresh footprints covered the wooden floor.

Someone had left only minutes before.

Emma's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

On the wall hung dozens of newspaper clippings.

Every one of them was about the wildfire.

Every missing-person report.

Every search for Cooper.

Every article about the little girl who vanished.

In the center was one photograph.

Emma froze.

It was the same little girl from the old picture.

Only now...

Her face wasn't scratched out.

She looked about eleven years old.

Smiling.

Alive.

Pinned beneath the photograph was another note.

It read:

"Please don't look for me anymore. Cooper already saved my life once. It's time for me to save someone else's."

Detective Harris stared at the message in disbelief.

"This means..."

"She's alive."

The room erupted with emotion.

Some officers smiled.

Others cried.

Three years of heartbreak had suddenly become three years of unanswered questions.

But before anyone could celebrate...

A young officer noticed something lying beneath the table.

A worn leather journal.

Inside were hundreds of handwritten entries.

The first page began with six words that sent chills through everyone's body.

"My name isn't Lily anymore..."

Emma slowly turned to the next page.

There was a photograph of the little girl...

Standing beside a woman no one recognized.

At the bottom, another sentence had been written in careful handwriting.

"The people searching for me were never the ones I was hiding from."

Detective Harris closed the journal.

His face turned white.

"This was never a missing-child case."

"It was an escape."

And suddenly, everyone realized the wildfire hadn't stolen the little girl.

It had given her the only chance she ever had to disappear.

But who had she been running from...

May you like

And why was she still hiding after all these years?

The final answer would be more heartbreaking than anyone could imagine...
