Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in Court

The courtroom of the County Superior Court was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped outside the double doors as local reporters vied for a glimpse of the high-profile family feud involving a decorated combat veteran and his domineering mother.

Judge Thomas Sterling—Arthur Sterling’s longtime colleague—presided over the bench, his expression grave and severe as he reviewed the dense stack of legal briefs before him.

“The court has reviewed the emergency protective filings, the medical reports from Pediatric ICU, and the digital audit logs provided by Captain Vance’s legal team,” Judge Sterling announced, his deep voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls. “Before we enter formal pleas, the prosecution has requested permission to enter supplemental witness testimony.”

“The state calls Audrey Vance,” Assistant District Attorney Martinez announced clearly.

A murmur rippled through the gallery as Audrey, wearing a plain gray sweater and no makeup, walked slowly to the witness stand. Her hands shook as she placed them on the wooden ledge and swore the oath.

Under direct examination, Audrey didn't look at her mother once. Eleanor sat at the defense table, glaring at her daughter with a look of such concentrated venom it could have melted steel.

“Ms. Vance,” ADA Martinez asked gently. “In your own words, please describe the living conditions imposed upon Mrs. Sophia Vance and her infant son over the past eight months.”

Audrey swallowed hard, her voice trembling at first before finding a steady, haunting rhythm. She read directly from the paper I had given her, detailing the locked doors, the confiscated phones, the withheld meals, and the night Leo’s fever spiked to 104 degrees while Eleanor laughed and demanded Sophia ‘learn some respect.’

In the gallery, several people gasped aloud. A female reporter in the front row furiously scribbled notes.

When Audrey finished, the courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Eleanor’s defense attorney stood up frantically. “Objection, Your Honor! This is clearly a coerced testimony by a disgruntled family member seeking plea leniency!”

“Overruled, counselor,” Judge Sterling snapped, striking his gavel once with authority. “The court has examined the digital corroboration logs, including audio and video feeds extracted from the residence. The testimony matches the physical evidence down to the second.”

Judge Sterling turned his gaze downward, fixing Eleanor Vance with a look of absolute judicial contempt.

“Eleanor Vance,” the judge said, his voice ringing through the quiet room. “You stand charged with felony elder financial exploitation, unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment resulting in acute medical emergency, and willful obstruction of justice. Given the overwhelming evidence of premeditation and malicious intent, bail is denied.”

Eleanor stood up abruptly, her face twisted in rage. “You can't do this! I am a pillar of this community! This is a conspiracy! Lucas, you ungrateful little monster, I brought you into this world!”

“And I am taking you out of it,” I said quietly from the front row, my voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom.

Two bailiffs stepped forward, their heavy hands clamping down on Eleanor’s shoulders. As they slapped the steel cuffs back onto her wrists and dragged her toward the side exit, her furious screams echoed off the high ceiling until the heavy oak doors banged shut behind her.

It was over.
