Chapter 1 - The Echo of Footsteps

The greasy smell of the La Serenata alleyway hit Lena like a physical blow as she burst through the service door, her worn sneakers skidding wildly across the frozen asphalt. Her chest burned with a familiar, searing agony, the cold February air tearing at her lungs with every jagged breath. She had broken the cardinal rule of her eight-month exile: she had stopped being a ghost.
Behind her, muffled shouts bled through the heavy oak service doors. Marco Lombardi’s men were already moving, their synchronized precision unspooled by panic and disbelief. Lena didn't look back. She scrambled over a waist-high brick wall, her palms scraping raw against the mortar, and dropped into the labyrinthine service tunnels behind the warehouse district.
She ran blindly through the maze of steam pipes and shadows, her mind racing faster than her feet. She had saved a dog. A purebred French bulldog belonging to the most ruthless syndicate boss in the Tri-State area. In doing so, she had traded her anonymity for sixty seconds of reckless medical pride. Dr. Guzman had taught her to save lives, but that exact lesson had gotten him executed in a parking lot. Now, the cartel’s digital footprints would trace her right back to this kitchen.
Deeper into the tunnels she sprinted, ducking beneath a rusted water main until she reached her sanctuary—a disused utility alcove hidden behind a stack of rotting wooden pallets. She collapsed onto her thin, moldering mattress pad, trembling violently as the adrenaline began to drain from her system, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep terror.
Her phone, a burner she had salvaged from a garbage bin months ago, buzzed violently against the concrete floor.
It was powered off. She hadn't turned it on since the day Dr. Guzman died. But as she stared at the dark plastic screen, a chilling realization settled over her stomach like lead. She hadn't just exposed herself to Lombardi’s men.
