Chapter 1 - The Embrace of a SerpentHer arms wrapped around my neck, smelling of expensive vanilla and something unfamiliar—something sharp, metallic, like a woman's designer perfume mixed with the stale musk of a stranger’s car.

“You’re… you’re early,” Evelyn gasped, pulling back just enough to look into my eyes. Her pupils were dilated, a telltale sign of panic. For a fleeting second, the immaculate mask slipped, revealing the calculating stranger beneath.
“Twenty-four hours,” I said, my voice dangerously low. I didn’t return the hug. My arms stayed glued to my sides, heavy as lead, still aching from hauling my duffel bag across three continents. “And it sounds like I missed quite a lot while I was away.”
Mr. Henderson cleared his throat awkwardly, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. He gave a nervous nod, muttered something about checking his sprinkler system, and practically sprinted back across his lawn. Coward. He had listened to every word, nodding along like a sheep at slaughter.
“Oh, darling, you must be exhausted,” Evelyn purred, her composure snapping back into place with terrifying speed. She reached out to take the strap of my tactical backpack, but I stepped aside, letting it drop to the concrete with a heavy, metallic thud.
“Where is my mother, Evelyn?”

“Inside, resting,” she said smoothly, her eyes locking onto mine with an unblinking intensity. “She had a rough night, sweetie. You know how these things go. Her confusion is getting worse by the day. Honestly, having you back is the best medicine she could possibly ask for.”
Every word was a calculated lie, polished and rehearsed. But as I pushed past her and stepped through the front door, I wasn't thinking about my mother's cognitive health. I was thinking about the bank account we shared, the power of attorney I had foolishly signed over before shipping out, and the heavy silence echoing from the top of the stairs.
