My hand dropped to my lower abdomen. The digital screen of the pregnancy test in my pocket still glowed with a faint, steady light: Pregnant. 1-2 weeks.
"He chose a cage," I whispered to the empty room.
As an architect, I understood load-bearing walls. Ethan thought he had removed the foundation of my life, but he didn't realize he had only cleared away rotting timber to make room for steel. I didn't cry. Tears were for losses you didn't see coming. This? This was a war, and I had just been handed the tactical advantage.
By morning, I had already contacted Victoria Vance—the most ruthless divorce litigator in King County.
"Harper," Victoria purred over the phone, her voice like crushed glass and expensive velvet. "I heard about Ethan walking out. Rumor has it he’s already shacked up with that corporate climber, Jessica Reynolds. How are you holding up?"
"I’m holding a winning hand, Victoria," I replied, my voice completely steady. "I want everything. The house, the firm assets, his corporate shares, and total financial disclosure. But more importantly, I want absolute silence. Let him think he’s escaping scot-free. Let him build his little life with Jessica. Let them get comfortable."

"Not yet," I said, looking out at the gray waters of Lake Washington. "Let him hang himself first. A pregnancy in secret is a ticking clock, Victoria. And his time is running out."
