Chapter 8 - THE OCEAN ALWAYS WINS

A New Horizon in the RainThe morning after the storm was quiet.

The rain had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, clean fog that hung low over the water, obscuring the horizon. The Port of Portland was a crime scene, surrounded by yellow tape and federal agents, but the black RHIB was long gone, tucked away in another anonymous cove along the jagged coast.

Faye stood on the rocky shore where she had dumped Dante Moretti two days prior. Her house was a smoldering pile of black timbers three miles to the north, but she didn't feel the weight of it anymore. The past was ash.

A sound behind her made her turn.

Dante walked down the path from the road. He was dressed in a clean, dark wool coat, his hands tucked into his pockets. The bandages were gone from his head, leaving a jagged, red scar along his temple that would stay with him for the rest of his life.

He stood beside her, looking out at the gray water.

"The feds took Morozov into custody," Dante said. "He’ll never see the outside of a federal penitentiary. His organization on this coast is finished."

"And what about you?" Faye asked. "The feds aren't looking for you?"

"They know better than to look where they cannot find," Dante replied softly. He reached into his coat and pulled out a new envelope. It wasn't the cream-colored one Salvatore had carried. This one was black leather, heavy and marked with the Moretti seal.

He held it out to her.

"Inside is the deed to a property in Astoria," Dante said. "It sits on a cliff. It has a view of the entire mouth of the river. It’s built of stone, Faye. It doesn't burn easily."

Faye looked at the leather case. She didn't take it immediately. "And what do I have to do for it?"

"Nothing," Dante said, his eyes meeting hers. "The debt for my life is paid. You are a free woman. You can go to Astoria, buy a new boat, and never see me again."

He paused, the wind whipping his coat around his legs.

"Or... you can stay with us," he continued, his voice dropping into that quiet, magnetic register. "Salvatore is getting old. He needs someone who doesn't blink when the glass starts breaking. Someone who knows how to navigate the rough water."

Faye looked at the black leather case, then out at the ocean. The tide was coming in, the water rising over the rocks, washing away the footprints they had left in the sand. The old life of pouring coffee and worrying about taxes felt like a story about someone else. A different woman. A weaker one.

She reached out and took the case, tucking it into the pocket of her tactical jacket.

Then she looked up at Dante Moretti, a slow, sharp smile touching her lips—the smile of a predator that had finally found its pack.

"The stone house in Astoria," she said. "Does it have a dock?"

May you like

Dante smiled back, his obsidian eyes shining in the gray morning light. "It has the best dock on the coast, Faye."

They turned together and walked up the path, leaving the cold, quiet Pacific behind them, ready to face whatever storm was coming next.
