Chapter 5 - THE EMBERS OF TRUTHHook: Out of the flames, a phoenix rises. Out of the lies, a queen is born.

The climb through the narrow, soot-choked exhaust shaft was an agonizing nightmare. Mike went first, using his sheer physical strength to wedge himself up the brick interior, pulling Sophia up behind him. I went last, the heat from the burning basement floor licking at my ankles.

When we finally burst through the brick chimney cap onto the roof of the Peterson mansion, the structure below us was already engulfed in roaring orange flames. The black smoke billowed into the morning sky like a beacon.

"Look!" Sophia gasped, coughing violently as she pointed down toward the long, winding driveway of the estate.

A black luxury sedan was speeding away toward the main gates. Richard Sterling was escaping, believing his problems had just been reduced to ashes.

"He has Daniel in the back," Mike said, his face covered in soot, his eyes burning with determination. He pulled his phone from his pocket—miraculously still functional. He didn't dial 911. He dialed a direct line. "Agent Harris? This is Mike Peterson. Sterling just set the Cherry Hills estate on fire. He’s driving a black Mercedes S-Class, heading north on University Boulevard. He has Daniel Vance in the vehicle. And Agent? He has the murder weapon—the digitalis vials—in his briefcase."

I stood on the edge of the roof, watching the car disappear into the distance. The wind whipped my hair, now streaked with gray and ash. I looked down at my hands. They were scraped, bleeding, and covered in soot.

But they were mine.

Within ten minutes, the sky was filled with the sirens of fire trucks and police cruisers. A tactical police helicopter swooped over the estate, its spotlight tracking the highway a mile away.

We were rescued from the roof by a fire crane. As the paramedics wrapped a yellow shock blanket around my shoulders, Agent Harris of the FBI walked toward us, his expression grim.

"We got them," Harris said without preamble. "Sterling tried to ram a police barricade near the highway. The vehicle flipped. Sterling is alive, but he’s in handcuffs. Daniel..."

Harris hesitated, looking at me with a look of profound sympathy.

"Is he dead?" I asked, my voice flat.

"No," Harris sighed. "But the sedation Sterling gave him, combined with the impact of the crash... he’s suffered a massive stroke. He’s alive, Mrs. Vance. But he’s paralyzed. He can’t speak. He can’t move."

I stood silent for a long moment, watching the embers of the Peterson house drift into the Colorado sky.

Daniel had spent twenty-six years trying to silence me. He had spent a lifetime making sure I had no voice, no power, and no control. And now, by his own choices, he was trapped in a prison of his own silence forever.

"Mom?" Sophia whispered, taking my hand. "Are you okay?"

I looked at my daughter—the valedictorian, the brilliant young woman who had saved my life with a single sentence.

"I've never been better, Sophia," I said, and for the first time in my life, I meant it completely. "Let's go home."
