Chapter 5 - The Price of BloodThe gunshot echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the warehouse like a clap of thunder.

Dante Rossi’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. The words caught in his throat. He looked down at his chest, where a dark, spreading crimson flower had suddenly blossomed through his expensive cashmere coat.
Behind Dante, standing in the shadows near the loading bay door, Vincent lowered his smoking sniper rifle.
Dante staggered backward, his grip on the gun loosening as his knees buckled. Lily slipped from his arms, tumbling onto a pile of discarded canvas tarps on the floor, crying hysterically.
"You... you missed..." Dante choked out, coughing up a mouthful of dark blood before collapsing face-first onto the wet concrete.
Adrian didn't look at his uncle. He didn't care if Dante was dead or dying. His entire world narrowed down to the little red coat lying on the floor.
He dropped his pistol, sprinting across the concrete with a speed he hadn't possessed in years. He fell to his knees beside Lily, scooping her up into his massive arms and pulling her trembling body tightly against his chest.
"I got you," Adrian sobbed, his voice completely shattered as he buried his face in her soft brown curls. "I got you, baby. Daddy’s here. Daddy’s got you."
Lily sniffled, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck just as she had done in his daydreams for three agonizing years. She pulled back slightly, her pale blue-gray eyes—his eyes—locking onto his tear-streaked face.
“Daddy?” she whispered softly, her little hand reaching out to touch his wet cheek. “Can I hold your hand just once?”
For the second time that day, the most feared man on the East Coast broke down in front of everyone.
Adrian took her tiny fingers, pressing them against his palm as a sob tore from his chest. "Always, my sweet girl. Forever."
From the office doorway, Sarah stood free of her bonds—Vincent had quietly slipped in and cut her loose with a pocketknife—watching the scene unfold. Tears streamed down her face, washing away the dirt and blood, as she walked slowly across the concrete toward them.
Adrian looked up, his gray-blue eyes meeting hers across the space of a few feet. There were no words left to say. No apologies could undo the past, and no promises could erase the dangers of his world.
Sarah stopped in front of him, knelt down in the rain and blood, and placed her hand over both of theirs—her fingers intertwining with Adrian's and Lily's.
"We have to go," Sarah whispered, her voice steady now, filled with a fierce, quiet strength. "Now."
Adrian nodded, standing up with Lily safely cradled in his left arm while his right hand held Sarah's firmly.
As they walked out of Pier 44 into the pouring rain, leaving the burning empire of the Rossi family behind in the dark, Adrian knew the truth: his heart was failing, his enemies were still out in the world, and his life was borrowed time.

But as Lily giggled softly, resting her head against his shoulder, Adrian Moretti knew he had already won.
